Team Canada wins seven medals at Junior World Championships

The Canadian Junior Racquetball Team earned 7 medals at the 2010 Junior World Racquetball Championships in Los Angeles, November 15-20: two silver and one bronze in singles and four bronze in doubles. The silver medalists were Pedro Castro and Frédérique Lambert, both of Montreal. They are the first Canadians to be in the Boys U18 and Girls U18 finals, respectively, in several years.

Castro got to the final with two wins on Friday as he defeated team-mate Jamie Slamko of Edmonton in the quarter finals and then American Bradley Kirch in the semi-finals before losing to American Taylor Knoth in the final, 15-5, 15-8. Castro and Slamko were also bronze medalists in doubles.

Coby Iwaasa of Lethbridge got two bronze medals in Boys U14: one in singles and one in doubles with partner Sami Harb of Burlington, Ont. The Canadian boys doubles team of Samuel Murray (Baie Comeau, Que.) and Anthony Schonberger (New Westminster, B.C.) in Boys U16 also earned bronze medals.

On the girls side, Lambert beat Bolivian Adriana Riveros in quarter finals and American Danielle Key in the semi-finals, but lost to the Girls U18 final to American Aubrey O'brien, 15-6, 15-4. In Girls U14, the team of Michelle Morissette (Baie Comeau, Que.) and Mckenzie Brayley (Calgary) earned bronze medals.

Overall, there were 33 Canadians competing in Los Angeles. For a complete list of results, click here.
