Reigning national men's champion Mike Green and women's champion Jen Saunders will be leading Racquetball Canada's contingent into the 2011 Pan American Championships, slated for April 17-23 in Managua, Nicaragua.
Green, of Burlington, Ont., has won six Canadian singles and six doubles titles. He will be playing doubles with Saskatoon's Kris Odegard, a two-time singles champion who paired with Green to win the 2010 Canadian men's doubles championship. Vincent Gagnon of Montreal and Tim Landeryou of Saskatoon will be representing Canada in men's singles competition.
Saunders, of Winnipeg, has won four Canadian singles and six doubles titles, teaming for the latter crowns with Josée Grand'Maître of Longueuil, Québec. Grand'Maître will be playing doubles with Saskatoon's Brandi Jacobson Prentice while Montreal's Frédérique Lambert, the reigning 18-and-under women's singles champion and Saunders will represent Canada in singles.
The team was selected based on performance at the 2010 Canadian championships and two recent selection events.
Michel Gagnon of Longueuil, Québec and Loren Prentice of Saskatoon are the team's coaches. Isabelle Morneau of Montreal will be the physiotherapist and Cal Smith of Vancouver represents Canada as an official.
The Pan American Championships are a qualifying competition for th e2011 Pan American Games. Canada can send a full contingent of eight athletes to the Pan American Games if, in Nicaragua, the men's team places among the top four countries and the women's team places among the top thee countries. The 2011 Pan American Games will be held October 14-28 in Guadalajara, Mexico.
