US Open Men's Pro: John Ellis defeated Mike Ceresia 8,3,4. Ceresia spent the week writing colour commentary for the USRA web site. Vincent Gagnon defeated G. Herrera 3,10,4 then fell to Ellis 9,6,1. Francis Guillemette lost to C. Crowther 1,2,4. Mike Green defeated W. Tilton 2,8,8 and Adam Karp (6),9,3,3 then lost to R. Carson (8),9,9,6 in a well-fought match that ended after midnight. Kane Waselenchuk defeated C. Carrillo 6,(7),7,6 then M. Williams 1,(3),(8),4,2 (an early scare - Williams went on to win the men's Open event), then crushed J. Moreno 1,2,2 and R. Women's Committee The Racquetball Canada Women's Committee is pleased to be able to support women's programs across the country. Most recently, the committee has provided introductory racquetball kits (containing a racquet, eyeguards and balls) to some provinces to use in introducing our sport to women and girls. The Women's Committee has also agreed to assist in the March, 2003, LPRA tournament in Saskatoon. Other funding subsidies are available, for information please contact Cheryl McKeeman (604-737-1786 or cmckeemn@hotmail.com). The Women's Committee will subsidize an event in Manitoba featuring Cheryl Gudinas and Jennifer Saunders, as well as other players - stay tuned for details. The Women's Committee will subsidize a Women's Only tournament in Ontario this spring - check future newsletters for further information. Women wishing to upgrade their coaching or refereeing certification can apply to the committee for subsidies. This year, the Committee will subsidize the expenses of Alvine Losier of Moncton, New Brunswick to attend a CBET coaching clinic in the new year. New Coaching Program Director of Coaching Ron Brown has written a description of the new CBET coaching program - please check the Racquetball Canada website at http://www.racquetball.ca/en/technical/coaching/cbet.html Anyone interested in learning to instruct or coach racquetball should take a look at this new and exciting program. Manuals will soon be available online. Coaching Awards Congratulations to Ron Brown and Michel Gagnon, who recently won PetroCanada Coaching Excellence awards in recognition of coaching medalists (Jennifer Saunders and Josee Grand'Maitre, respectively) at the World Championships. Each coach received a Wittnauer watch. Junior World Championships The Junior Worlds will once again be held in Orlando, Florida. The event runs from December 18-22. Juniors interested in playing should contact Racquetball Canada or their provincial association or the USRA www.usra.org for details. Watch the Racquetball Canada web site for updates December 20-22. Junior Nationals Hotel The host hotel for the 2003 Junior Nationals will be the Saskatoon Travelodge, 106 Circle Dr W, Saskatoon, SK S7L 4L6, phone (306)242-8881. Rooms for this event will cost $89/night. Communications Coordinator Hired Racquetball Canada is pleased to welcome a new staff member, Peter Robinson. Peter will be coordinating Racquetball Canada's internal and external communications, including the monthly newsletter, the magazine, and media coverage of major events. Peter is a Toronto-based writer and editor. His past experience includes working with a number of publications and web sites including: ScoreGolf, FaceOff, Prospects Hockey and the Pan Am (Winnipeg 1999) Souvenir Program. New Brunswick News In Moncton, Alvine Losier reports that 10 women attended a beginner's clinic in November. Alvine has also scheduled a round robin tournament and a league for women players who are new to the sport. Another clinic is scheduled for January. Quebec News National Team member Josee Grand'Maitre was nominated as an International category coach at the annual Coaching Awards. Michel Gagnon recently completed his NCCP Level 4 coaching certification. Josee Grand'Maitre has been appointed to a Secretary of State work group as an AthletesCAN representative. This group will make recommendations regarding the implementation of a new Canadian coaching structure and delivery mechanism. In December, Josee will also attend a Canadian-France sport exchange to look at the regional sport services and training systems operations. Immediately upon her return, Josee will be coaching at the Junior World Championships in Florida. Nova Scotia News The fifth annual Toys 4 Tots tournament will be held December 12-14. ProKennex Balls Racquetball Canada has finalized an agreement with ProKennex as the official ball for the next three (3) years. Individuals who are members of Racquetball Canada may purchase balls at a cost of $142.20+taxes+shipping; balls may be ordered from the Racquetball Canada head office. Name Changes The Racquetball Canada "National Team Committee" is now known as the "High Performance Committee". The "Espoir Team" will now be known as the "Development Team". McKnight wins US OPEN Dwayne McKnight won the men's 55+ Singles event with a 15-6, 15-9 win over Bill Welay of New Jersey. Congratulations to Dwayne who lost just one game in the four matches he played. Hall of Fame Congratulations to Diane Lynn who was recently inducted into the Saskatchewan Hall of Fame. Her induction was based on her softball prowess, but her championships in racquetball (1987-1991) were also cited. Newfoundland News In November, two introductory clinics were held for women. Both were well-attended and additional clinics are planned for the near future. A league is also in the workds. For the past six weeks, Eric Easton has been coaching six young women, and they are enjoying the sport. A junior girls program is expected to start up in the new year, and other plans are in the works as well. ProKennex and Ektelon starter-kits were provided by the Racquetball Canada Women's Committee to assist in getting more women to play. Travel Coaches The High Performance Committee (formerly the National Team Committee) has named Ron Brown and Michel Gagnon as the travelling coaches for the next two years. |
