July Issue CONTENTS National Team Athletes Receive Funding Training Camp in Winnipeg Women's Pro Tour Season Ends Women's Pro Tour in Saskatoon, March 2003 Sports Fair in Nova Scotia BC Names New Racquetball Canada Rep Email Addresses Requested National Team Athletes Receive Funding Congratulations to National Team Players Vincent Gagnon, Josee Grand'Maitre, Mike Green, Francis Guillemette, Amanda MacDonald, Karina Odegard, Lori Jane Powell and Kane Waselenchuk, who each received $4000 from the Canadian Olympic Committee as a result of their performance at the 2001 Tournament of the Americas in Honduras. (Check www.racquetball.ca for the reports from the Honduras event.) The Canadian Olympic Committee (COC) is distributing $919,000 to 218 World leading athletes in 2002. A selected number of athletes from Olympic and Pan American sports ranked top-8 in the World were awarded the Grant. The COC, a private, not-for-profit corporation, is the largest private sector benefactor of high performance sport in Canada. It is responsible for all aspects of Canada's involvement in the Olympic movement, including Canada's participation in the Olympic and Pan American Games. In addition, the COC manages a wide variety of programs that promote the Olympic Movement in Canada through cultural and educational means. For more information see the COC website: http://www.coa.ca Training Camp In Winnipeg The team travelling to the World Championships will meet for a weekend training camp in Winnipeg on July 12-14, prior to leaving for Puerto Rico on July 31. Racquetball Canada's web site www.racquetball.ca will be updated frequently with information about the team as they strive to defend Canada's World Championship title. Women's Pro Tour Season Finale At the last Ladies Pro Racquetball Association (LPRA) event in Virginia, Jen Saunders defeated Shannon Feaster Stewart of Maryland 17-15, 15-9, 17-15, then lost to Kim Russell (Texas) 8, 13, 10. Lori Jane Powell defeated local player Candi Hostovich 7, 10, 10, then Denise Mock (Texas) 15, (12), 10, 15 to meet Jackie Rice in the quarterfinals; Rice won that match-up 9, 6, (17), 9. LPRA tournaments are updated on their web site at http://www.ladiesproracquetball.com When on the road, Lori Jane Powell tries to keep her web site updated - www.powell-performance.com Women Pros to Hit Saskatoon in March 2003 For the second season in a row, the best female racquetball players in the world will compete at an LPRA event in Saskatoon at the River Racquets Club. The Racquetball Canada Women's Committee is pleased to be able to provide some funding to support this initiative. At last year's event the players and the fans all had a great time, so check it out! Details will be posted on the web site as they become available, or contact Carol Jacobson at rrac@sk.sympatico.ca Sports Fair In Nova Scotia Paul Keeping, the Nova Scotia representative to the Racquetball Canada Board of Directors, recently ensured that racquetball had a presence at a Sports Fair held in the Halifax area. Over 2000 school kids were exposed to racquetball and other sports. BC Names New Racquetball Canada Rep The BC Racquetball Association has named a new representative to the Racquetball Canada Board of Directors. Wayne Stilling replaces Cal Smith, who was recently elected as a member of the Racquetball Canada Executive. |
