June Issue CONTENTS National Championships wrap up in Vancouver Pan Am Games team announced Ranking change on its way Terry Nelson new VP-Finance Executive Director Position Annual meetings wrap-up Membership Registrations National Championships wrap up in Vancouver That's it for another year! The National Championships are in the books, with festivities wrapping up at Studeo 55 in Vancouver on May 24.More than 190 players in 19 singles and 13 doubles divisions took part from Monday to Saturday. Mike Green won his second straight men's singles title with a tiebreaker-win over Cory Osborne, while Lori-Jane Powell won a thrilling women's final with a tie-breaker win over Jen Saunders. In open doubles, Osborne teamed with Francois Viens to win the men's title in an up-and-down tie-breaker over Mike Ceresia and Brian Istace. It was the first national title for both men. Saunders and José Grand'Maitre also won in a tiebreaker to take the women's crown over Powell and Julie Neubauer.For those wanting to check other results, please go to racquetball.ca and click "Drawsheets" for a full run-down of results. A separate results file, with photos of all Champions will be posted shortly. Festivities wrapped up Saturday night with a top-notch banquet and the presentation of a special award by the Women's Committee to Lori-Jane Powell, and, to the world the national men's team, their world championship rings. Racquetball Canada would like to thank everyone on the Organizing Committee and the staff at Studeo 55 for all their hard work. In particular special mention should go to John Dykstra, Cheryl McKeeman and Lori Kirk. Thanks! Pan Am Games team announced The Pan Am Games team has been announced for the upcoming event this summer in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. Singles players are: Lori-Jane Powell and Jen Saunders on the women's side, and Brian Istace and Mike Green on the men's; Francois Viens will team with Cory Osborne in men's doubles and Josée Grand'Maitre and Julie Neubauer will comprise the women's team. It is the third Pan Am appearance for Josée, a record for Canadian racquetball. Lori-Jane is the other Pan Am veteran after her silver medal showing in women's doubles in Winnipeg four years ago. The rest of the team will be making their first Pan Am appearance. Head Coach Michel Gagnon has set a goal of six medals for the squad, two of which he hopes are gold. The Pan Am Games run from Aug. 1-17, with racquetball taking place Aug. 5 through the 10th. Congratulations to all Team Canada members and, most of all, GOOD LUCK! Ranking change on its way Racquetball Canada's ranking system will be undergoing changes. The changes are expected to be in place by the fall. Stay tuned for more details. As many members are likely already aware, Dan Smith has decided to end his tenure as the rankings co-coordinator. Luke Coughey will be replacing Dan. Terry Nelson new VP-Finance Terry Nelson has been appointed the new VP-Finance. A warm welcome and sincere best wish should go out to Terry, who many members may already know as the former VP-Development and a club owner himself. Positions remain open for VP-Development and VP-Marketing/Communications. Members are encouraged to apply if they feel they can help the organization, or encourage other members who they think may be interested. Executive Director Position - Jan Coates' Departure As many members are aware, Jan Coates is leaving her position as Executive Director at the end of the month. Jan has been a very effective director during her tenure with Racquetball Canada and she will be missed. Jan remains until the end of the month and has been active in selecting her replacement. On behalf of the entire Association, we wish Jan the best and thank her for her significant contributions to Racquetball Canada. Annual meetings wrap-up - Ken Barteski farewell As is the case every year, Racquetball Canada wrapped up its annual meetings, culminating with its Annual General Meeting on May 20. Things ran smoothly and were well attended by executive, board and general members all. In addition to the general business of annual meetings, the occasion marked the end of Ken Barteski's involvement as VP-Finance. Ken has been a valuable member of the Association and his expertise will be missed.Those members who would like copies of minutes or summaries are asked to contact Peter Robinson (contact details below) to get your copy. Membership Registrations Most members have renewed their registrations for 2003, but those who haven't are encouraged to do so through the Web site or by contacting Peter Robinson. Reminders to all members to please keep all contact info updated and provide e-mail addresses if at all possible.
