National Racquetball Week Finally it’s here! Between March 8th and 16th, special racquetball events will take place all across the country. There are junior events scheduled in almost every province, including tournaments, clinics, and raffles. Many thanks to Ektelon, E-Force, Harrow, Head, and ProKennex for their generous donation of racquets to our raffle. The funds raised will be used towards Junior Development in each province. Check out the web site for details about activities in your province. Junior National Championships The 2003 Junior Nationals will be held at RiverRacquet Club in Saskatoon, April 29-May 3. The entry form is available online from the Club, at www.RiverRacquetClub.ca. Check also the magazine Canadian Racquetball, or the Racquetball Canada web site. The entry deadline is April 15. National Championships The 2003 National Championships will be hosted by Studeo55 in Vancouver. The entry form is available on the Racquetball Canada web site or from the Spring issue of Canadian Racquetball magazine. Please note that the host hotel has been changed to The Empire Landmark. The entry form has been published in the recent issue of the Canadian Racquetball magazine, and is also available on line from the Racquetball Canada web site. Western Canadian Championship Alberta beat out Saskatchewan and Manitoba – check the upcoming magazine for details. IRT/LPRA LPRA Feb 1-2 San Diego. Lori Jane Powell defeated Milee Young 4,7,2 then lost to Adrienne Fisher 4,(8),3,6. Cheryl Gudinas won the finals. Check out LJ’s comments at www.powell-performance.com IRT Feb 1 Cleveland – Mike Green lost (10),10,5,10 to Jack Huczek. Kane Waselenchuk defeated Alvaro Beltran 11,5,(4),6 and Cliff Swain (8),9,9,7 but had to forfeit the finals to Jason Mannino due to a shoulder injury. IRT Feb 8 Austin, Texas – Kane Waslenchuk defeated Jack Huczek 8,6,8 to win the Longhorn Pro Am in his new hometown. Waselenchuk took out Cliff Swain 7,(8),10,2 in the semi-finals, and Rocky Carson 10,3,3 in the quarters. Huczek had defeated #1 seed Jason Mannino 9,(3),(3),9,10 in the semis. LPRA Feb 16 Nashville, Tennessee – No Canadian women participated. Cheryl Gudinas defeated Kerri Wachtel 7,(7),(4),3,8 in the finals. Coaching Certification The Racquetball Canada Women’s Committee is pleased to assist three women – Alvine Losier from Moncton, Sue Lye from St John’s, and Dorys Boissonneault from Vancouver – to attend a clinic to become certified coaches under the new CBET program. The clinic will be held in Saskatoon March 14-16. In addition to several coaches becoming certified at the “instructor” level, a couple of individuals will be trying to be certified as Course Conductors. Travel Coaches Racquetball Canada’s High Performance Committee has selected Loren Prentice and Michel Gagnon to be the National Team travel coaches for the next two years. McKeeman Resigns Cheryl McKeeman resigned from the Racquetball Canada Executive effective February 18. Questions concerning the magazine, newsletter, web site, media coverage, marketing, promotions or other related issues should be directed to the Racquetball Canada national office.
