October 2005
Canadian Open Racquetball ClassicThe excitement surrounding the Canadian Open Racquetball Classic that will be October 13-16 is building with almost all the tickets for the event sold, and the successful response to an event grant application from Sport Canada that Racquetball Canada and Adrian Webb applied for. Look for updates on the Racquetball Canada site as the tournament progresses. National & Development Team NamedRacquetball Canada has named its National and Development Teams for the 2005-06 season. The players on the National Team are: Amanda Dunn, Vincent Gagnon, Josée Grand'Maître, Michael Green, Véronique Guillemette, Brian Istace, Julie Neubauer, Lori-Jane Powell, Tom O'Brien, Corey Osborne, Jennifer Saunders and François Viens. The players on the Development Team are: Genviève Brodeur, Eric Desrochers, Linda Ellerington, Francis Guillemette, Brandi Jacobson Prentice, Tim Landeryou, Kris Odegard, and Alison Schlichemeyer. All of the National and Development Team players will be in Burlington for the Canadian Open. Junior World ChampionshipsThe Junior National Team held a training camp in Montreal on the first weekend of October, so they are well into their training for the 17th Junior Worlds Championships that will take place Juarez, Mexico in December. All players who are considering participating in Junior Worlds should know that their entries must be filed through the Racquetball Canada office, because the International Racquetball Federation (IRF) has proscribed all entries for Junior Worlds must be sent to them by the national racquetball federations, rather than by individual players, as in the past. Junior Worlds entry forms are now available on the IRF website: www.internationalracquetball.com. CBET Clinic in HalifaxFifteen people participated in a CBET coaching clinic in Halifax the first weekend of October with people turning out from all Atlantic provinces. The clinic was conducted by Ron Brown and Lori-Jane Powell. Canadian Olympic CommitteeJosée Grand'Maître has been named to a five person Canadian Olympic Committee (COC) Task Force to "study all aspects of the COCıs activities, practices and policies with the goal of making the COC more inclusive of all sports including Pan Am only sports with youth, the public and the media and its own organization." The purpose of this committee is "is to analyze the current culture within the COC, review all policies, by-laws and even the constitution to ensure that all members are equally recognized. Due to the current culture that seems to prevail with the COC and it Board, EC and Staff, it has become apparent that Pan Am only athletes and sports are not being considered to the same degree as Olympic sports. This goes for athletesı recognition and sport positioning within the COC." Racquetball Canada is happy that the COC is conducting this review and that a racquetball player has been appointed to the task force as the Pan Am Sport Athlete Representative. Pro ToursChristie Van Hees, a native of Kelowna, British Columbia now residing in Calgary, won the first tournament of the newly revamped Women's Professional Racquetball Organization (WPRO) Tour at the Rosartio Racquet Club in Rosario Beach, Mexico. She defeated American Cheryl Gudinas of Lisle, Illinois, 8-11, 11-7, 11-4, 11-8 in the final. Fellow Canadian, Lori-Jane Powell lost in the first round of the tournament to Susy Acosta of Mexico. Powell has recently moved from Calgary to San Diego in an effort to play more WPRO tournaments. The next WPRO tournament is in Gaithersberg, Maryland, USA, October 13-16. Full results of the men's and women's pro tours can be found at their respective websites: Tournament ScheduleMost provinces have submitted their tournament schedules for 2005-06, so the RC tournament page is mostly complete now. Here are the tournaments for October.
