US Open

Several Canadians will be competing at the US Open, including Christie Van Hees, who will be trying to defend her title. The USA Racquetball site will have the draws and results up during the tournament, and we'll be putting out press releases about how the Canadians do throughout the tournament.

On the International Racquetball Tour (IRT), Ryan Smith of Burlington, Ontario competed in the Albuquerque stop in October. He won his qualifying match defeating Evan Ussery (Albuquerque, N.M.), 11-7, 11-1, 11-0, which qualified him for the main draw of 16. There he faced top seed Jack Huczek (USA), and lost, 11-5, 11-1, 11-5. Huczek won the tournament, beating Rocky Carson (USA) in the final, 11-6, 10-12, 11-6, 12-10. It was Huczek's fourth victory of the season.

On the Women's Professional Racquetball Organization (WPRO) tour, American Rhonda Rajsich won the Gaithersburg, Maryland tournament in October defeating fellow American Cheryl Gudinas, 11-9, 11-9, 8-11, 11-6 in the final. However, at the Long Island tournament, neither of those player reached the final, where Kerri Wachtel (USA) beat Chilean Angela Grisar, 6-11, 11-8, 11-8, 11-5, to take the title. Racquetball or Table Tennis will be the final sport, and the decision is to rest with the home province. We are hopeful that racquetball will be selected. Fingers crossed!
