National Racquetball WeekNational Racquetball Week is November 3 to 11 this year. The theme is "Racquetball Rocks!". There are many events planned across the country, so contact your local association, or Geri Powell, VP of Development for Racquetball Canada, or Lori-Jane Powell, Racquetball Canada's Technical Director. Website RelaunchThe new Racquetball Canada website will be relaunched on Monday, November 5. Please check it out, and let us know what you think. Kris Odegard wins in IrelandKris Odegard won the Kingscourt Open in Ireland. In the final, Odegard defeated Noel O`Callaghan, the top Irish men's player. Kingscourt will be the site of next year's World Championships from August 1-10. Team Canada would love to have other Canadians supporting them on site. More information on the 2008 World Championships is available at the event website. Coaches for 2008 Pan American ChampionshipsRon Brown was named coach for the 2008 Pan American Championships in Costa Rica in March. Applications are now being sought for an assistant coach for these championships. Canadian OpenThe Third Canadian Open was successfully run at Cedar Springs in Burlington, Ontario October 11-14. Last year's winners won again, as both Christie Van Hees and Jack Huczek successfully defended their titles. This year the Open is both an International Racquetball Tour and Women's Professional Racquetball Organization tour event, so the best players in the world will be in Burlington this month. Pro ToursAside from the Canadian Open, there was only one other Tier 1 tournament on the International Racquetball Tour (IRT) in October. Rocky Carson (USA) won his second event of the season at the New Mexico Pro-Am by defeating Jack Huczek (USA), 9-11, 11-7, 11-2, 11-2. No Canadian players were in action in New Mexico. The Canadian Open was October's only tournament on Women's Professional Racquetball Organization (WPRO) tour. The IRT and WPRO websites are: Coaching ClinicRacquetball Canada continues to press forward on developing its new coaching courses. The Introduction to Competition course is now in development, and there was a trial of this course done on October 26-28 in Burnaby, B.C. The following people achieved TRAINED status during that weekend. Dorys Boissonneault, Sebastien Boissonneault, Debbie Goodhope, Gord Hay, Rich Nowak Cheryl McKeeman, Geri Powell, Mike Sawisky, David Serra and Rich Threlfall. Congratulations to all these coaches! Canadian Racquetball magazineThe next issue of Canadian Racquetball will be mailed out this month. Look for it in your mailbox or at a club near you. Tournament ScheduleThe tournament season marches on this month across the country. But the big tournament will be the US Open down in Memphis, Tennessee, where several top Canadian players will be in action, including Christie Van Hees, who is the two time defending champion.
AdministrationDan Smith has resigned as the Nova Scotia representative for Racquetball Canada. We thank him for his contributions, and wish him well in the future. In closing...Now is the time to renew your Racquetball Canada membership for the 2007-08 through the Web site, or the national office : contact Executive Director, Elisa Lane by email. The annual Racquetball Canada membership fee remains the same as it has been for several years: $25. Please keep your contact information updated, including email addresses. Doing so saves RC money, which means it saves you money. Also, it helps us keep you informed of what is going on in Canadian racquetball.
