Vancouver's Ian McKenzie is the 1987 winner of the Ivan Velan Award, the C.R.A.'s most prestigious award. The presentation was made by C.R.A. President Dan Stone as part of the awards ceremony at the 1987 Senior Nationals banquet.

The Velan Award which was first awarded in 1977, is presented by the C.R.A. for "outstanding contribution to Canadian racquetball." Although considered by many to be an annual award, the Velan award is not necessarily presented each year. It was not awarded in 1980 and again in 1986.

Nominated by the B.C.R.A., McKenzie was a Director of the B.C.R.A. dating back to 1971 and carried on until he was elected a Director of the C.R.A. in 1980. He continues to be [a] key member of the National Board and Executive and currently holds the position of First Vice-President.

He was the first President of the C.R.A. Promotions Association, the first co-chairman of the officiating committee and was instrumental in writing the first official rule book for the C.R.A. In addition, he formulated the original Officiating Instruction Package and the Course Conductor's Package for the C.R.A. Currently a Level III referee, McKenzie is credited with the beginning in 1971 of what is today known as Senior Nationals.

Ian, dont la candidature a été déposée par l'A.R.C.B., a été directeur de l'A.R.C.B. en 1971 et a occupé ce poste jusqu'à sa nomination au poste de directeur de l'ACR en 1980. Il est toujours un membre important et de l'exécutif et actuellement il occupe le poste de premier vice-président.

Il a été le premier président de l'Association pour la promotion, le premier co-président du comité des arbitres et a joué un rôle important dans la rédaction du premier manuel officiel des règlements de jeu pour l'ACR. De plus, il a élaboré le premier cours de formation des officiels et de directeurs de cours pour l'ACR. Ian McKenzie, qui est actuellement reconnu arbitre de niveau III, a été, au dire de plusieurs, l'instigateur de ce qu'on appelle aujourd'hui le Championnat national senior.
