Yvan Girardin of Montreal was awarded with the Ivan Velan award, the most prestigious award within the C.R.A. The presentation was made by president Dan Stone as one of the hi-lights during the senior nationals awards banquet in Toronto. It was accepted on Girardin's behalf by Jean Desautels, President of the Q.R.A.

Girardin has been a long time supporter of the sport of racquetball and he has gone through the ranks at both the provincial and national levels. He has served as both the Quebec association president and representative on the national board of directors. In addition, the Quebec native has also served as committee chairs for the national team and tournaments. He was most recently second vice-president of the C.R.A.

A professor at the University of Montreal, he has taught in the faculty of physical education for over 20 years. Girardin continues to lecture both in Quebec and across Canada.

The Velan Award is not awarded annually. Nominations must come from the provincial association and are reviewed by the executive committee of the C.R.A. in May of each year.

La présentation a été faite par le président, Dan Stone; ce fut l'un des points saillants durant le banquet du championnat canadien, à Toronto. Le prix a été accepté au nom de Girardin par Jean Desautel, président de l'A.R.Q.

Girardin a été un partisan du sport de racquetball durant de nombreuses années et a été un joueur de calibre provincial et national. Il a été président de l'association du Québec et un membre du Conseil d'administration de l'organisme national. En plus, ce Québécois a été président du comité de l'équipe nationale et des compétitions nationales.

Professeur à l'Université de Montréal, il a enseigné à la faculté d'éducation physique pour plus de vingt ans. Girardin continue à donner des conférences tant au Québec que dans les autres provinces du Canada.

Le prix Velan n'est pas alloué annuellement. Les nominations pour ce prix doivent être acheminées par les associations prvinciales et ensuite revues, au mois de mai de chaque année, par le Comité exécutif de l'A.C.R.
