Waselenchuk wins second US Open

MEMPHIS, TENNESSEE : November 21, 2004.

Kane Waselenchuk of Edmonton has completed the slaughter of the field at the 2004 Choice Hotels 9th US OPEN racquetball tournament presented by U.S.A. Racquetball (USAR) in Memphis, Tennessee. He said he was a "man on a mission" and that mission is now complete.

Waselenchuk, the defending champion, top seed and number 1 player on the International Racquetball Tour (IRT) beat sixth seeded Cliff Swain (USA) in the final 11-1, 11-3, 11-0. Swain was clearly feeling the effects of Saturday's 5 game semi-final victory over Jack Huczek.

Waselenchuk won 18 straight games at the US Open this year, and is 36-1 in the last two US Opens. Further, he only gave up 64 points in the 18 games this year, an astonishing 3.55 points per game.

Waselenchuk solidified his hold on the number 1 spot in the world with the victory. He has won 5 of the six tournaments this season. Swain won the other.

In the women's final, number 1 seed Cheryl Gudinas (USA) prevailed over third seeded Rhonda Rajsich (USA), but she needed five games to complete the task. Gudinas had won the first two games, and looked to be on track to win three straight. However, Rajsich had other plans, and she fought back and won games 3 and 4 before dropping the fifth game.

Waselenchuk "on a mission" at the US Open

"I'm a man on a mission," said Edmonton native Kane Waselenchuk after beating Rocky Carson (USA) in the semi-finals of the 2004 Choice Hotels 9th US OPEN racquetball tournament presented by U.S.A. Racquetball (USAR) in Memphis, Tennessee. Waselenchuk is defending champion, top seed and the number 1 player on the International Racquetball Tour (IRT).

Waselenchuk beat fourth ranked Carson in three straight games by increasing margins, 11-6, 11-4, 11-2. Asked to explain how he makes some of his incredible returns, Waselenchuk said "sometimes I just stick out my racquet and hope for the best." And the best has been what he's got so far.

On Sunday, Waselenchuk will play Cliff Swain (USA), two time US Open winner, and former world number 1. Swain, ranked 6th in the tournament, advanced to the final by beating second ranked Jack Huczek (USA) in a marathon 5 game match that lasted well over two hours.

At 38, Swain may be feeling the effects of that marathon tomorrow. However, he has looked very focused all tournament and played with an intensity that has been missing in recent years.

Swain has won one of the IRT tournaments this season, but Waselenchuk has won the other four.

Van Hees injured in US Open semi-finals

Christie Van Hees of Kelowna, British Columbia, the number 2 seed, was injured during her semi-final match with 3rd seeded Rhonda Rajsich (USA) in the 2004 Choice Hotels 9th US Open presented by USA Racquetball (USAR) - racquetball's Grand Slam event. In reaching for the ball in the fourth game, Van Hees injured her right shoulder, and was unable to continue.

Van Hees started the match well, winning the first game 11-5. But games 2 and 3 were dominated by Rajsich, who won them 11-0 and 11-1.

Van Hees seemed to have pulled it back together in game 4, and was leading 3-2 when the injury happened.

In the final, Rajsich of Phoenix, Arizona will play the winner of the other semi-final between number 1 seed Cheryl Gudinas (Lisle, IL) and number 4 seed Kristen Walsh (Salt Lake City, UT) that will happen later on Saturday.

Waselenchuk in semis at US Open

Kane Waselenchuk of Edmonton, the number 1 seed and defending champion, advanced to the semi-final of the 2004 Choice Hotels 9th US OPEN presented by U.S.A. Racquetball (USAR) in Memphis, Tennessee.

Waselenchuk beat Mike Guidry (USA) in the quarter-finals on Friday, 11-5, 11-3, 11-3. With matches running late, Waselenchuk was eager to get his match underway, because he wants "this second US Open title more than anything."

Waselenchuk's next opponent will be 4th seed Rocky Carson (USA), and he'll be ready for Carson. "I'm here to win, and prove that I'm the best," said Waselenchuk.

Van Hees advances to semi-finals at US Open

Christie Van Hees of Kelowna, British Columbia, the number 2 seed, advanced to the semi-finals by winning two matches on Friday at racquetball's Grand Slam event - the 2004 Choice Hotels 9th US Open presented by USA Racquetball (USAR).

Van Hees beat American Kelley Fisher in the round of 16, 11-5, 11-3, 11-1. Then in the quarter finals, Van Hees beat American Tammy Brown, 11-5, 11-8, 11-5. She was very focussed and clearly has her eyes on the prize after losing in the final here last year.

Van Hees's next opponent is Rhonda Rajsich (USA), the woman who defeated her in the final last year. Thus, Van Hees will have extra incentive to win their semi-final match on Saturday.

Rajsich advanced to the semi-finals on Friday by beating Mexican Paola Longoria, who was the Cinderella story of the women's draw. Longoria is just 15 years old, and had to qualify for the main draw. She did so, and then proceeded to beat the 6th and 11th seeds on her way to the quarter finals. But the clock struck midnight for Longoria against Rajsich, who won in three straight games, 11-5, 11-8, 11-1.

2 out of 3 Canadians advance at US Open

The top Canadian contenders have advanced in the 2004 Choice Hotels 9th US Open presented by USA Racquetball (USAR). Both Kane Waselenchuk of Edmonton, the number 1 seed and defending champion, and Christie Van Hees of Kelowna, British Columbia, the number 2 seed, advanced easily in their matches on Thursday.

Waselenchuk played twice on Thursday. He easily won his first match against Brian Fredenberg (USA), 11-4, 11-0, 11-2. But Waselenchuk's second opponent, Colombian Juan Herrera was tougher, especially in game 2 when Herrera had a 6-1 lead. However, Waselenchuk prevailed in that game and won the match in three straight games, 11-5, 11-9, 11-2.

Waselenchuk will next face either Mike Guidry (USA) or Polo Gutierrez (Mexico) on Friday in the quarter-finals. The Guidry-Gutierrez match will be played later Thursday.

Christie Van Hees of Kelowna, British Columbia, the number 2 seed, easily defeated Mexican Samantha Salas in three straight games, 11-6, 11-1, 11-0.

Van Hees will next face American Kelley Fisher.

The third Canadian in the draw, Jennifer Saunders of Winnipeg, lost her match against American Tammy Brown, 11-5, 11-7, 6-11, 12-10.

Canadians take first steps to racquetball's biggest prize

Canadians are among the top contenders for racquetball's biggest prize: the Choice Hotels US Open Championship. Kane Waselenchuk of Edmonton is the number 1 player on the International Racquetball Tour (IRT) and the defending US Open champion.

So, he'll be trying to repeat his perfomance of last year, when he beat American Derek Robinson in the final. But no man has repeated as US Open Champion in this eight year old event. Still Waselenchuk must be the favorite to repeat, as he has won 4 of 5 IRT tournaments this season.

Waselenchuk easily won his first match against Lance Gilliam of San Antonio, Texas, 11-4, 12-10, 10-1, although he did have to come back from 10-5 in the second game. He looks bigger and stonger than last year, and just as fast.

He'll next face another Texan Brian Fredenberg, one of the hardest servers in racquetball.

There are two Canadian women looking for the women's US Open crown. Christie Van Hees of Kelowna, British Columbia, is the number 2 player on the Ladies Professional Racquetball Association (LPRA) tour, and last year she was a US Open finalist, losing to American Rhonda Rajsich.

When Van Hees reached the final last year, it was a surprise, as it was only the second tournament that she had entered after taking a sabbatical of more than two years from the sport. She won the first tournament of this season, and was the runner-up in the second.

Jennifer Saunders of Winnipeg, one of the current Canadian doubles champions, is also competing in the women's Pro division. She won her qualifying match against Anita Maldanado of New York, 11-5, 11-6, 12-10. Saunders had to qualify for the main draw, because she hasn't played on the LPRA tour very much recently.

Her next match will be against Tammy Brown.

The Choice Hotels US Open is the largest racquetball tournament in the world with over 700 men and women professional and amateur players. Competition continues through Sunday at The Racquet Club, WellWorx Sportsplex, Ridgeway Baptist Recreation Center and the University of Memphis.

Waselenchuk remporte un deuxième titre de l¹Omnium des États-Unis

Kane Waselenchuk de Edmonton a réussi un parcours parfait à la neuvi&eagrave;me édition de l'Omnium des États-Unis Choice Hotels 2004, présenté par la Fédération américaine de racquetball (USAR) à Memphis, au Tennessee. Il avait déclaré en début de tournoi qu'il était en mission. Sa mission est maintenant complète.

Champion en titre et numéro un du classement de l'International Racquetball Tour (IRT), Waselenchuk a vaincu le sixième favori Cliff Swain des États-Unis 11-1, 11-3 et 11-0 en finale. Swain démontrait clairement des signes de fatigue à la suite d'une victoire en cinq matchs en demi-finale contre son compatriote Jack Huczek.

Waselenchuk a gagné 18 matchs consécutifs à l'Omnium des États-Unis cette année et il a une fiche de 36-1 à ce tournoi au cours des deux dernières années. De plus, il n'a accordé que 64 points en 18 matchs cette année, une moyenne incroyable de 3.55 points par match.

Waselenchuk a ainsi solidifié son premier rang au classement mondial avec cette victoire. Il a remporté cinq des six tournois cette saison. Swain a remporté le sixième.

Chez les femmes, l'Américaine Cheryl Gudinas, première joueuse mondiale, a vaincu la troisième favorite, Rhonda Rajsich des États-Unis en cinq matchs. Gudinas a remporté les deux premiers matchs et tentait de balayer la rencontre mais Rajsich avait une autre idée en tête et elle a remporté les troisième et quatrième matchs avant de s'incliner au bris d'égalité.

Waselenchuk en mission à l'Omnium des États-Unis

« Je suis en mission, » a déclaré Kane Waselenchuk de Edmonton après avoir vaincu l'Américain Rocky Carson en demi-finale de l'Omnium des États-Unis de racquetball Choice Hotels 2004, présenté par la Fédération américaine de racquetball (USAR) à Memphis, au Tennessee. Waselenchuk est champion en titre, favori à ce tournoi et il occupe le premier rang du classement de l'International Racquetball Tour (IRT).

Waselenchuk a vaincu le quatrième favori Carson en trois matchs consécutifs (11-6, 11-4 et 11-2). « Parfois j'étends ma raquette et j'espère pour le mieux, » expliquait Waselenchuk quand on lui a demandé comment il réussissait ses coups parfois incroyables. Ajoutons ici que le mieux s'est souvent produit pour le Canadien.

Dimanche, Waselenchuk affrontera l'Américain Cliff Swain, deux fois champion de l'Omnium des États-Unis et ex-numéro un mondial. Swain, sixième favori à ce tournoi, a accédé à la finale après avoir battu son compatriote Jack Huczek dans un marathon de cinq matchs qui a duré plus de deux heures.

Âgé de 38 ans, Swain pourrait bien ressentir les effets de ce marathon demain. Toutefois, il a semblé très concentre tout au long du tournoi et a joué avec une intensité qui lui manquait au cours des dernières années.

Swain a remporté un des cinq tournois de l'IRT cette saison et Waselenchuk a gagné les quatre autres.

Van Hees blessée en demi-finale de l'Omnium des États-Unis

Christie Van Hees de Kelowna, en Colombie-Britannique, deuxième favorite à l'Omnium des États-Unis de racquetball Choice Hotels 2004, s¹'est blessée lors de son match de demi-finale face à la troisième favorite, l'Américaine Rhonda Rajsich. Tentant de récupérer une balle dans le quatrième match, Van Hees s'est blessée à l'épaule droite et n'a pas été en mesure de continuer.

Van Hees avait bien débuté la rencontre, remportant le premier match 11 à 5. Rajsich a toutefois dominé le deuxième et le troisième match, l'emportant 11 à 0 et 11 à 1.

Van Hees semblait avoir repris le dessus dans le quatrième match et menait 3 à 2 au moment de subir sa blessure.

En finale, Rajsich de Phoenix, en Arizona affrontera la gagnante de l'autre demi-finale opposant la favorite Cheryl Gudinas (Lisle, IL) et la quatrième favorite Kristen Walsh (Salt Lake City, UT), disputée plus tard samedi.

Waselenchuk a vaincu l'Américain Mike Guidry en quarts de finale vendredi par la marque de 11-5, 11-3 et 11-3. Le Canadien avait bien hâte de disputer son match présenté en fin de soirée « désirant ce titre plus que toute autre chose. »

Le prochain adversaire de Waselenchuk sera le quatrième favori, Rocky Carson des États-Unis. « Je suis ici pour gagner et prouver que je suis le meilleur, » affirme l'Albertain.

Van Hees passe en demi-finale à l'Omnium des États-Unis

Christie Van Hees de Kelowna, en Colombie-Britannique, accède aux demi-finales de l'Omnium de racquetball des États-Unis après avoir éliminé deux Américaines vendredi à la neuvième édition du tournoi Choice Hotels 2004 présenté par la Fédération américaine de racquetball (USAR) à Memphis, au Tennessee.

Van Hees a d'abord battu Kelley Fisher en huitièmes de finale (11-5, 11-3 et 11-1) avant de disposer de Tammy Brown en quarts de finale (11-5, 11-8 et 11-5). Elle était très concentrée et a clairement les yeux fixés vers la médaille d'or après s'être inclinée en finale l'an dernier.

La prochaine adversaire de la Canadienne sera l'Américaine Rhonda Rajsich, celle qui l'a vaincu en finale en 2003. Raison de plus pour Van Hees de remporter cette demi-finale samedi.

Rajsich s'est qualifiée pour la demi-finale vendredi en battant la Mexicaine Paola Longoria, qui à l'âge de 15 ans vit un véritable conte de fée après avoir accédé au tableau principal par les rondes de qualification. Longoria a ensuite vaincu la sixième et la 11e favorite pour atteindre les quarts de finale. Rajsich a toutefois ralenti ses ardeurs, l'emportant en trois matchs de 11-5, 11-8 et 11-1.

Deux Canadiens sur trois survivent à la journée de jeudi à l'Omnium des États-Unis

Les favoris canadiens ont accédé aux rondes suivantes au terme de la journée de jeudi à l'Omnium de racquetball des États-Unis présenté par la Fédération américaine de racquetball (USAR). Kane Waselenchuk de Edmonton, grand favori, champion en titre du tournoi et Christie Van Hees de Kelowna, en Colombie-Britannique, deuxième favorite, sont facilement passés aux rondes suivantes de la neuvième édition du tournoi Choice Hotels 2004.

Waselenchuk a remporté deux matchs jeudi, battant facilement l'Américain Brian Fredenberg 11-4, 11-0 et 11-2, puis l'emportant en trois matchs corsés contre le Colombie Juan Herrera (11-5, 11-9 et 11-2), alors qu'il tirait de l'arrière 6 à 1 dans le deuxième match.

Waselenchuk affrontera l'Américain Mike Guidry ou le Mexicain Polo Gutierrez (Mexico) vendredi en quarts de finale. La confrontation Guidry-Gutierrez se déroulera jeudi.

Christie Van Hees de Kelowna, en Colombie-Britannique, deuxième favorite, a facilement vaincu la Mexicaine Samantha Salas en trois matchs de 11-6, 11-1 et 11-0.

Van Hees affrontera maintenant l'Américaine Kelley Fisher.

La troisième Canadienne du voyage, Jennifer Saunders a perdu contre l'Américaine Tammy Brown (11-5, 11-7, 6-11 et 12-10).

Premiers pas pour les Canadiens en route vers le plus important titre de la saison

Les Canadiens figurent parmi les plus importants aspirants à remporter le plus important titre de racquetball de la saison, l'Omnium des États-Unis Choice Hotels. Kane Waselenchuk de Edmonton occupe le premier rang du classement de l'International Racquetball Tour (IRT) et il est le champion en titre du tournoi.

Il tentera donc de répéter sa prestation de l'an dernier, quand il a vaincu l'Américain Derek Robinson en finale. Personne n'a réussi à remporter deux titres consécutifs dans la courte histoire de ce trophée et il doit avoir remporté quatre des cinq tournois de la saison de l'IRT.

Waselenchuk a remporté son premier match contre le Texan Lance Gilliam (11-4, 12-10 et 10-1) après être revenu d'un retard de 10 à 5 dans le deuxième match. Il semble être plus gros et plus fort que l'an dernier et tout aussi rapide.

Un autre Texan est au menu pour Waselenchuk à son prochain match, soit Brian Fredenberg, un joueur reconnu pour ses services de plomb.

Deux autres Canadiennes sont inscrites à ce tournoi. Christie Van Hees de Kelowna, en Colombie-Britannique est deuxième au classement de la Ladies Professional Racquetball Association (LPRA) et elle a été finaliste l'an dernier à l'Omnium des États-Unis, s'inclinant contre l'Américaine Rhonda Rajsich.

Quand Van Hees a atteint la finale l'an dernier, elle en a surpris plusieurs puisqu'il s'agissait de son deuxième tournoi seulement après deux années sabbatiques. Elle a gagné le premier tournoi cette saison et a été finaliste au deuxième.

Jennifer Saunders de Winnipeg, championne canadienne en double, participe aussi au tournoi dans la classe professionnelle. Elle a remporté son match de la ronde de qualification contre la New Yorkaise Anita Maldanado (11-5, 11-6 et 12-10). Saunders a du se qualifier pour accéder au tableau principal puisqu'elle n'a pas pris part aux tournois de la LPRA récemment.

Son prochain match sera contre une autre Américaine, Tammy Brown.

L'Omnium de racquetball des États-Unis Choice Hotels est le plus important tournoi de racquetball au monde avec plus de 700 joueurs et joueuses professionnelles et amateurs. La compétition se poursuit jusqu'à dimanche au Racquet Club, au Sportsplex WellWorx, au Centre récréatif baptiste Ridgeway et à l'Université de Memphis.
