The defending champions are all present to defend their titles. Mike Green (Hannon, ON) will try to defend his two year reign as men's singles champion. His toughest competition should come from Brian Istace (Calgary), who is coming off an impressive gold medal performance at the Pan American Racquetball Championships last month in Eucador. Lori Jane Powell (Calgary) also won gold at the Pan American Championships, and will look to defend her Canadian singles title. Powell's toughest competition will likely be from one of the defending National Champions in doubles: Josée Grand'Maître (Longueuil, PQ) and Jennifer Saunders (Winnipeg). Grand'Maître and Saunders won the National Team Selection Event for doubles in January in Saskatoon, and they were the Canadian doubles team at the Pan American Championships, where they finished second. Corey Osborne (Penetanguishene, ON) and Francois Viens (Montreal) are reunited for their title National defense. Osborne chose to play singles last month in Ecuador, where he finished second to Istace. That led to Viens being paired with Tom O'Brien (Penetanguishene, ON) for doubles. They earned bronze medals. The format of the National Championships is that doubles will be played Monday to Wednesday with singles competitions to follow Thursday to Saturday. The results of the Championships will be combined with those from the National Team Selection Events held earlier this year to select the players for Team Canada to go to the World Racquetball Championships in South Korea in August.
