CANADIAN WINS AGAIN!

Kane Waselenchuk, of Edmonton, Alberta, won the International Racquetball Tour (IRT) Pro Nationals in Las Vegas on Sunday, defeating Alvaro Beltran (Mexico) in the final, 10-12, 11-1, 11-5, 11-1.

Waselenchuk, who now resides in Austin, Texas, won for the second consecutive time. This is his 5th IRT tournament title of the season, more than any other player.

On his way to the finals, Waselenchuk beat Dan Llacera (USA) in the round of 16, 11-2, 11-7, 11-5, Dan Fowler (USA) in the quarter finals, 11-5, 11-1, 11-2, and number 3 seed Jason Mannino (USA), 11-2, 11-6, 11-3, in the semi finals.

Canadian Mike Green (Hannon, Ontario) also did well in the tournament, reaching the semi-finals.

Ranked number 9 on the IRT, Green qualified for the main draw of 16 by beating Andres Herrera, 11-5, 11-3, 12-10. In the main draw, he beat 8th seeded Susdy Monchik (USA), 11-4, 7-11, 11-7, 7-11, 12-10, and then upset the number 1 seed, Jack Huczek (USA), 1-11, 11-9, 11-8, 11-8, before losing to Alvaro Beltran (Mexico), 12-10, 11-8, 11-8.

Those wins are are important for Green, as he trying to finish in the top 8 on the IRT at season's end. The top 8 players automatically qualify for the main draw, so they do not have to play qualifying matches.

Waselenchuk, qui habite maintenant Austin, au Texas, a remporté ce tournoi pour une deuxième année consécutive. Il s'agit aussi de son cinquième titre de l'IRT cette saison, plus que tout autre joueur sur le circuit.

En route vers la finale, Waselenchuk a vaincu l'Américain Dan Llacera (11-2, 11-7 et 11-5) en huitième de finale, l'Américain Dan Fowler (11-5, 11-1 et 11-2) en demi-finale et le troisième favori, l'Américain Jason Mannino (11-2, 11-6 et 11-3) en demi-finale.

Un autre Canadien, Mike Green de Hannon, en Ontario, s'est aussi fait remarqué avec une participation à la demi-finale.

Classé au neuvième rang du classement de l'IRT, Green s'est qualifié pour les huitièmes de finale en battant Andres Herrera (11-5, 11-3 et 12-10). Green a ensuite disposé du huitième favori, l'Américain Susdy Monchik (11-4, 7-11, 11-7, 7-11 et 12-10) pour ensuite vaincre le premier favori, l'Américain Jack Huczek (1-11, 11-9, 11-8 et 11-8). C'est finalement face à Beltran que le Canadien a plié l'échine (12-10, 11-8 et 11-8).

Ces victoires sont importantes pour Green, tandis qu'il tente de terminer parmi les huit meilleurs du classement de l'IRT d'ici la fin de la saison. Ces huit joueurs sont automatiquement qualifiés pour les tournois suivants, évitant ainsi les matchs de qualification.
