Van Hees ends season with win

Christie Van Hees of Kelowna, British Columbia, won the final of the Ladies Professional Racquetball Tour (LPRA) Pro Nationals in Atlanta, Georgia at the Southern Athletic Club, defeating Cheryl Gudinas of Lisle, Illinois, 11-3, 11-7, 11-8. Pro Nationals was the last tournament of the LPRA season.

The win solidifies Van Hees's position as the number 1 LPRA player. It was the third time Van Hees and Gudinas had met in the finals this season. Van Hees won two of those finals, and four of the seven LPRA tournaments this season. Gudinas won two LPRA tournaments, including once against Van Hees in the final.

Canada now boasts the number 1 women's and men's professional racquetball players in Van Hees and Kane Waselenchuk of Edmonton, Alberta, who finished number 1 on the International Racquetball Tour (IRT) last month after winning 8 of the 11 IRT tournaments in the 2004-2005 season.

On Saturday, Van Hees began by beating Tammy Brown of Boise, Idaho in the quarter-finals, 11-2, 12-10, 3-11, 11-3. Then in the semi-finals, Van Hees beat Rhonda Rajsich (Fountain Valley, Arizona), 11-3, 11-5, 11-6.

Van Hees's opponent in the final will be Cheryl Gudinas of Lisle, Illinois. Gudinas reached the finals by beating Kerri Wachtel of Cincinnati, Ohio, 11-5, 10-12, 11-7, 11-4.

Van Hees and Gudinas are the two top LPRA players. They have met in twice in the finals this season with each player winning once. If Van Hees wins on Sunday, it will be her fourth victory of the season, more than any other player. A Gudinas victory will be her third of the season and tie Van Hees for tournament victories this season.

In the other quarter final matches, Gudinas beat Diane Moore (Griffith, Indiana), 11-5, 11-1, 11-1, Rajsich beat Chilean Angela Grisar, 11-4, 11-6, 11-3, and Wachtel beat Kersten Hallander (San Diego, California), 11-13, 11-6, 11-8, 11-6.

If Van Hees wins on Sunday, she will solidify her number 1 LPRA ranking, and it would be a great season finish for Canada. It would be the first time that a racquetball season has ended with Canadians as number 1 players on the women's and men's pro tours. Kane Waselenchuk of Edmonton, Alberta finished number 1 on the International Racquetball Tour (IRT) last month.

Women's Pro Nationals

Christie Van Hees of Kelowna, British Columbia, ranked first on Ladies Professional Racquetball Tour (LPRA), is trying to finish the season on a winning note at the LPRA Pro Nationals hosted by the Southern Athletic Club in Atlanta, Georgia. Van Hees has won three LPRA tournaments this season, more than any other player.

Van Hees got a good start in Atlanta by beating Nancy Enriquez of Chihuahua, Mexico, 11-2, 11-4, 11-4 in the round of 16. She'll face Tammy Brown of Boise, Idaho in the quarter-finals on Saturday. Brown beat Brenda Kyzer (Lexington, South Carolina), 11-4, 5-11, 10-12, 11-6, 11-5, in the round of 16.

Earlier Enriquez beat Lori-Jane Powell of Calgary, the reigning Canadian champion, in five games, 7-11, 11-8, 5-11, 11-8, 11-9.

Powell will try to defend her Canadian title in Regina at the Canadian National Championships beginning May 23.

Van Hees's main opposition in Atlanta could be Cheryl Gudinas of Lisle, Illinois. Gudinas also easily reached the quarter finals by beating Mexican Samantha Salas, 11-5, 11-4, 11-4. She'll next face Diane Moore (Griffith, Indiana) who beat Adrienne Fisher (Dayton, Ohio), 7-11, 11-7, 11-6, 11-4.

The third seed, Rhonda Rajsich of Fountain Valley, Arizona, also reached the quarter finals by beating Susana Acosta of Chihuahua, Mexico, 12-10, 11-5, 13-11. She'll face Chilean Angela Grisar, who beat Kelley Fisher of Dayton, Ohio, 11-5, 11-9, 11-4.

But the fourth seed, Kristen Walsh of Salt Lake City, Utah, lost to veteran Kersten Hallander (San Diego, California), 11-8, 0-11, 11-2, 11-7. Hallander, the thirteenth seed, will next play fifth seed Kerri Wachtel of Cincinnati, Ohio, who beat Johanna Shattuck of Denver, Colorado, 11-8, 11-5, 11-4.

Plus tôt, Enriquez avait battu Lori-Jane Powell de Calgary, championne canadienne en titre, en cinq matchs (7-11, 11-8, 5-11, 11-8 et 11-9).

Powell se portera à la défense de son titre aux championnat canadiens à Regina à compter du 23 mai.

La principale opposition de Van Hees à Atlanta pourrait bien être Cheryl Gudinas de Lisle, Illinois. Cette dernière a facilement atteint les quarts de finale en battant la Mexicaine Samantha Salas (11-5, 11-4 et 11-4). Elle disputera son prochain match contre Diane Moore de Griffith, Indiana, qui a disposé d'Adrienne Fisher de Dayton, Ohio (7-11, 11-7, 11-6 et 11-4).

La troisième tête de série, Rhonda Rajsich de Fountain Valley, Arizona, a aussi atteint les quarts de finale en défaisant la Mexicaine Susana Acosta (12-10, 11-5 et 13-11). Elle affrontera la Chilienne Angela Grisar, qui a vaincu Kelley Fisher de Dayton, Ohio (11-5, 11-9 et 11-4).

Quant à la quatrième tête de série, Kristen Walsh de Salt Lake City, Utah, elle s'est inclinée contre la vétéran Kersten Hallander de San Diego, Californie (11-8, 0-11, 11-2 et 11-7).
