Van Hees wins Super Bowl

Christie Van Hees of Kelowna, British Columbia, defeated Cheryl Gudinas (USA) in a five game final, 11-8, 8-11, 11-5, 9-11, 11-0, to win the Super Bowl Open racquetball tournament in Stockton, California. This was the first event in 2005 on the Ladies Professional Racquetball Association (LPRA) tour and the fourth of the LPRA season.

Van Hees was seeded number 2 and Gudinas number 1. This is Van Hees's second victory of the LPRA season. Gudinas won the other two tournaments.

To reach the final, Van Hees first beat Kyoko Hirobayashi (Japan), 11-3, 11-6, 11-1, in the round of 16, and then American Adrienne Fisher in the quarter finals, 11-8, 11-9, 11-6.

In the semi-finals, Van Hees faced Rhonda Rajsich (USA), who she lost to in the US Open as a result of suffering a shoulder injury during the their match. But in California, Van Hees bested Rajsich, 11-5, 3-11, 11-8, 11-7 to set up the showdown with Gudinas.

The LPRA season is half over, and Van Hees and Gudinas are the top players on the tour, having split the first four tournaments. The next four tournaments will determine who'll be this year's number 1 women racquetball player.

Van Hees était deuxième favorite pour l'événement, derrière Gudinas. Il s'agit d'une deuxième victoire cette saison pour la Canadienne sur le circuit de la LPRA. Gudinas a gagné les deux autres tournois.

Pour atteindre la finale, Van Hees a d'abord vaincu la Japonaise Kyoko Hirobayashi (11-3, 11-6 et 11-1) en huitièmes de finale, puis l'Américaine Adrienne Fisher (11-8, 11-9 et 11-6) en quarts de finale.

En demi-finale, Van Hees affrontait l'Américaine Rhonda Rajsich, contre qui elle s'était inclinée aux Internationaux des États-Unis à la suite d'une blessure à l'épaule en cours de rencontre. En Californie, Van Hees a eu le dessus (11-5, 3-11, 11-8 et 11-7).

Nous en sommes donc rendu à la mi-parcours de la saison de la LPRA et les deux meilleures joueuses, Van Hees et Gudinas, ont chacune remporté deux tournois. Les quatre prochains tournois détermineront la meilleure joueuse mondiale.
