Waselenchuk wins racquetball's Pro Nationals in Chicago

Kane Waselenchuk of Edmonton won the Motorola Pro Nationals in Chicago, Illinois on Sunday by defeating rival Jack Huczek (Rochester Hills, MI) in three straight games, 11-6, 11-7, 11-8 in the final.

Huczek is the number 1 player on the International Racquetball Tour (IRT) and Waselenchuk is number 2, but this win is expected to put Waselenchuk in the top spot for the year end. The Motorola Pro Nationals was the last IRT event of the season.

Waselenchuk reached the final by defeating Ben Croft (Lake Bluff, IL), 11-7, 11-2, 11-4 in the Round of 16, Ruben Gonzales (Staten Island, NY) in the quarter finals, 11-3, 11-1, 11-2, and Rocky Carson (Laguna Niguel, CA) in the semi-finals, 11-4, 11-1, 11-0.

Huczek defeated fellow American Jason Mannino (San Diego, CA) in the other semi-final, 7-11, 11-7, 11-5, 11-7.

Later this month, Waselenchuk will be in Edmonton, his hometown, for the 2006 Canadian National Racquetball Championships to try and take the title he won three consecutive times from 1999 to 2001.

Waselenchuk has not competed for the title since, choosing instead to focus his attention on the IRT and becoming the number 1 player on it. He achieved that in 2003 but had relinquished that position earlier this season to Huczek.

The Canadian National Racquetball Championships begin May 22 and run to May 27 at the Mayfield Inn and Suites Athletic Club in Edmonton, Alberta.

Huczek est le meilleur joueur au classement de la Tournée internationale de racquetball (IRT) tandis que Waselenchuk occupe le deuxième rang. Toutefois cette victoire devrait pousser le Canadien au sommet. Le tournoi professionnel Motorola est le dernier tournoi de l'IRT cette saison.

Waselenchuk a atteint la finale en battant Ben Croft (Lake Bluff, IL) en trois matchs (11-7, 11-2 et 11-4) en huitièmes de finale, puis Ruben Gonzales (Staten Island, NY) en trois matchs (11-3, 11-1 et 11-2) en quarts de finale. C'est aussi en trois matchs que l'Albertain a disposé de Rocky Carson (Laguna Niguel, CA) en demi-finales (11-4, 11-1 et 11-0).

Dans l'autre demi-finale, Huczek a vaincu son compatriote Jason Mannino (San Diego, CA) en quatre matchs (7-11, 11-7, 11-5 et 11-7).

Dans quelques semaines, Waselenchuk sera de retour dans sa ville d'origine pour prendre part au championnat canadien 2006, pour reprendre le titre qu'il a remporté trois fois de suite entre 1999 et 2001.

Waselenchuk n'a pas défendu son titre depuis, choisissant plutôt de concentrer ses efforts aux activités de l'IRT et ainsi devenir le meilleur joueur du circuit. Il a atteint cet objectif en 2003, mais il a cédé sa place à Huczek plus tôt cette saison.

Le championnat canadien de racquetball 2006 se déroulera du 22 au 27 mai au Club athlétique du Mayfield Inn and Suites d'Edmonton, en Alberta.
