Racquetball Canada Announces National and Development TeamsRacquetball Canada is pleased to announce its National and Development Teams for the 2006-07 racquetball season. Twelve athletes were named to the National Team, and ten to the Developmental Team. The 12 athletes on Racquetball Canada's National Team 2006-07 are: Eight of the National Team members - Grand'Maître, Green, Istace, Odegard, Powell, Saunders, Van Hees, and Viens - represented Canada at the World Championships earlier this month in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. At Worlds, Van Hees won the individual gold medal in women's singles, Saunders earned bronze in women's singles, and the doubles teams of Grand'Maître and Powell in women's and Green and Istace in men's also brought home bronze medals. Also, the men's and women's teams were silver medalists in the team competition finishing second to the US teams in each case. Three of the National Team members - Ellerington, Gagnon, and Guillemette - played in the Pan American Championships this past April in Guatemala City, Guatemala. The twelfth man on the National Team is Tim Landeryou of Saskatoon, Sask., who has been named to the team for the first time. Landeryou reached the semi-finals at the Canadian National Championships for the first time in May, finishing third overall. Also, he served as a referee for the International Racquetball Federation at the World Championships this month. The 10 members of Racquetball Canada's Development Team are: Connell and Rainville have been selected to the Development Team for the first time, as have Landeryou and Landreville, who were on the Junior National Team that competed at last year's Junior World Championship. Selection for Racquetball Canada's National Team is based on player's performances at the National Team Selection event (both doubles and singles) as well as at the National Championships. Selection for the Development team is based on player's performances at those events as well as a consideration of the player's age. The top two men and women players under 29, top two under 24 and top one under 21 make up the Development Team. Racquetball Canada congratulates all of the athletes selected for the National and Developmental Teams. The next international event will be the 2007 Pan American Championships in Santiago, Chile in April, 2007.
