Van Hees second in racquetball Racquet for the Cure tournament

Christie Van Hees of Calgary, reigning World and Canadian racquetball champion, lost Saturday in the final of the Racquet for the Cure tournament at the Denver Athletic Club in Denver, Colorado, a Women's Professional Racquetball Organization (WPRO) tour event.

Rhonda Rajsich (Phoenix, Ariz.), the number 1 player on the WPRO tour, defeated Van Hees in the final, 11-9, 11-3, 11-8. It was the fourth meeting of these players going back to last year's World Championships in the Dominican Republic. They have each won twice and lost twice.

In the semi-finals earlier Saturday, Van Hees beat Cheryl Gudinas (Lisle, Ill.), 9-11, 11-2, 12-10, 11-4. Van Hees has defeated Gudinas in their two meetings this season.

Van Hees reached the semi-finals by defeating Candi Hostovich (Falls Church, Virg.), 11-4, 11-4, 11-6, in the Round of 16, and Angela Grisar of Santiago, Chile, 11-4, 2-11, 11-9, 11-7, in the quarter finals.

In the other semi-final, Rajsich defeated Kerri Wachtel (Cincinnati, Ohio), 3-11, 11-5, 11-7, 13-11.

Proceeds from the Racquet for the Cure tournament benefit the Susan G. Komen for the Cure programs to treat and prevent breast cancer.

The next main WPRO tournament is the Great Canadian Challenge at the Premier Fitness Club in Oakville, Ontario from February 22-25, where Van Hees and several other top Canadian women racquetball players are expected to attend, as well as all the top WPRO players.

Christie Van Hees de Calgary, championne mondiale et canadienne en titre, a perdu la finale du tournoi 'Racquet for the Cure' présentée samedi au Club athlétique de Denver, au Colorado, tournoi du circuit professionnel WPRO de racquetball féminin.

Rhonda Rajsich (Phoenix, AZ), première joueuse au classement du circuit WPRO, a vaincu Van Hees en finale (11-9, 11-3 et 11-8). Il s'agissait de la quatrième rencontre entre ces joueuses depuis les championnats du monde de l'an dernier en République Dominicaine. Elles ont maintenant chacune remporté deux matchs et perdu deux matchs face à l'autre.

En demi-finale, présentée plus tôt en journée samedi, Van Hees a vaincu Cheryl Gudinas (Lisle, IL) en quatre matchs de 9-11, 11-2, 12-10 et 11-4. Van Hees avait vaincu Gudinas au cours de leurs deux affrontements jusqu'à présent cette saison.

Van Hees a atteint les demi-finales en disposant de Candi Hostovich (Falls Church, VA), 11-4, 11-4 et 11-6, en huitièmes de finale, puis la Chilienne Angela Grisar en quatre matchs 11-4, 2-11, 11-9 et 11-7, en quarts de finale.

Dans l'autre demi-finale, Rajsich a défait Kerri Wachtel (Cincinnati, OH) 3-11, 11-5, 11-7 et 13-11.
