Upsets continue on Day 3 of Junior National Racquetball Championships

The Boys 18 and under division continued to be rough for higher seeds on Wednesday at the 2007 Canadian Junior National Racquetball Championships at REVS Health Club and Fitness Centre in Burnaby, B.C.

Today's victim was number 3 seed Sean Barclay of Saskatoon, who went down to the 6th seed Tommy Murray of Baie Comeau, Que. They split the first two games, and in the tie-breaker, Murray was up 6-1, only to have Barclay come back to make it 9-6. Murray regained the lead at 10-9, and Barclay leveled the match at 10, but couldn't win it, losing 15-11, 5-15, 12-10.

Murray will face the winner of Jamie Slamko of Edmonton, who was yesterday's giant killer defeating number 2 seed, Scott Campbell of Brandon, Man., and Michael Rusak of Vernon, B.C., who were still playing their match.

In other divisions, young Coby Iwaasa of Lethbridge, Alta. played big winning quarter final matches in both Boys 10 and under and 12 and under on Wednesday. In the 12 and under category he beat Nicolas Bousquet (Anjou, Que.), last year's silver medalist in Boys 10 and under, 15-6, 16-14.

Iwassa, seeded 13th in 12 and under has now defeated two of the top five seeds, as Bousquet was seeded fifth. Yesterday, Iwassa beat the fourth seed, Cole Slamko (Okotoks, Alta), who was last year's gold medalist in 10 and under.

In the semi-finals, Iwassa will face the number 1 seed, Anthony Schonberger of New Westminster, B.C., who beat Jacob Banin of Regina in the quarter finals, 15-1, 15-2.

In 10 and under Iwassa defeated Chandon Yu of Brampton, Ont., 15-8, 15-5. That sets up a rematch against Bousquet in the 10 and under semi-finals on Thursday.

The girls divisions had the day off on Wednesday. The top seeds have won their matches so far, including defending Girls 18 and under champion, Denise Haynes of Clare, N.S., and defending Girls 14 and under Champion, Frédérique T. Lambert of Montreal.

The 167 players are competing in 22 divisions of both singles and doubles. The competition runs through Saturday at REVS Health Club and Fitness Centre in Burnaby, B.C.
