Green and Istace win their third racquetball doubles titleMike Green of Burlington, Ont. and Brian Istace of Calgary three-peated by winning 2007 Canadian Men's Doubles Championship on Tuesday at the Canadian National Racquetball Championships at the Regina Court and Fitness Club in Regina. Green and Istace defeated Vincent Gagnon (Longueuil, Que.) and François Viens (Montreal), 15-10, 15-4, to claim their third consecutive title. It's Green's fourth straight, as he won the 2004 championship with Tom O'Brien. But Green and Istace found themselves down 6-1 in game one, as "Viens was on fire," Istace said afterwards, adding "we were hitting good shots, but he was just putting everything away." So, the defending champs took a time out in hopes of changing the momentum. It worked as they came back to win the first game and match. Green said he "expected Gagnon and Viens to be confident because of their recent success." Gagnon and Viens won the Pan American Doubles Championship last month in Santiago, Chile. It's Green and Istace third straight title, and the third time Gagnon and Viens have been runners up. Overall, Green and Istace haven't lost in Canada, since they began playing together at the 2005 Nationals. In the semi finals earlier on Tuesday, Green and Istace defeated James and Tim Landeryou, brothers from Saskatoon, 15-9, 15-7, and Gagnon and Viens defeated Francis Guillemette (Montreal) and Kris Odegard (Saskatoon), 16-14, 15-8. In the women's final, Josée Grand'Maître of Longueuil, Que. and Jennifer Saunders of Winnipeg defeated Genevieve Brodeur (Sherbrooke, Que.) and Véronique Guillemette (Calgary), 16-14, 15-11 in a fast paced final to claim thelir fifth straight championship. Overall, one hundred and fifty one players will be competing in 25 singles and doubles divisions at the Regina Court and Fitness Club in Regina. The format of the championships has doubles on Monday and Tuesday with singles beginning on Wednesday and continuing until Saturday. |
