Canadian Racquetball Championship - Summary & AwardsThe 2007 Canadian National Championships wrapped up on Saturday at the Regina Court and Fitness Club in Regina. In all, thirty people from eight provinces won National Championships. Five people - two women and three men - won two divisions. Jennifer Saunders of Winnipeg won Women's Open Doubles with Josée Grand'Maître (Longueuil, Que.) and Open Mixed Doubles with Michael Burgess (Brandon, Man.). Myriam Laforge of Fredricton, N.B. won Women's B/C Doubles with Andrea Albert of Halifax, and Mixed B/C Doubles with Dan Smith of Timberlea, N.S. Kevin Caouette of Edmonton won Men's B singles and Men's B/C Doubles with Ashton Duda of Regina. David Bates won Men's 65+ and Men's 55+ Doubles with Michel Béchard of Hull, Que. Finally, Dave Tremblay of Regina won Men's 45+ by beating Graham Tamaki (Regina) with whom he also won Men's 45+ Doubles. At the closing banquet Saturday night, Racquetball Canada presented its annual awards. The 2007 Women's Award for significant contributions supporting and promoting women in racquetball went to Carol Jacobson of Saskatoon. The 2007 Ivan Velan Award for significant contributions to racquetball in Canada - Racquetball Canada's highest award - was awarded to Cheryl McKeeman of Vancouver. Ms. McKeeman has worked for racquetball in Canada in several organizational capacities, including serving on Racquetball Canada's Executive Board and the Board of the British Columbia Racquetball Association, where she is currently President. The 2008 Canadian National Racquetball Championships will be in Burlington, Ontario at Cedar Springs Health Racquet and Sports Club next May. |
