Van Hees wins The Great Canadian Challenge racquetball tournament

Christie Van Hees of Calgary won The Great Canadian Challenge, a Grand Slam event on the Women's Professional Racquetball Organization (WPRO) tour on Sunday at the Premier Fitness Club in Oakville, Ontario by defeating Rhonda Rajsich (Phoenix, Ariz.), the number 1 player on the WPRO tour, in the final.

Van Hees won the final in three straight games, 11-9, 11-7, 11-4. The win avenges the loss Van Hees suffered when she played Rajsich two weeks ago in the final of the Denver WPRO tournament.

Afterwards, Van Hees said "it's always a challenge playing Rhonda," but these days she's "feeling really comfortable on the court" and it showed. Van Hees only lost two games en route to the title.

In the semi-finals on Saturday, Van Hees beat Cheryl Gudinas Holmes (Lisle, Ill.), 11-7, 11-2, 8-11, 11-4, while in the earlier rounds she beat Kerri Wachtel (Cincinnati, Ohio), 10-12, 11-5, 11-6, 11-4, in the quarter finals and Vivian Gomez (Miami), 11-2, 11-2, 11-3, in the Round of 16.

For her part, Rajsich "didn't understand why I didn't play well, because I felt great." However, she complimented Van Hees, saying her opponent "was on fire the whole match."

In the past year, Van Hees and Rajsich have met five times going back to last August at the World Championships in the Dominican Republic. Van Hees now has the edge having won three of their five matches.

En demi-finale samedi, Van Hees a vaincu Chery Gudinas Holmes (Lisle, IL) en quatre matchs (11-7, 11-2, 8-11 et 11-4), tandis que dans les rondes précédentes, et a disposé de Kerri Wachtel (Cincinnati, OH) en quatre matchs (10-12, 11-5, 11-6 et 11-4) en quarts de finale et Vivian Gomez (Miami, FL) en trois matchs (11-2, 11-2 et 11-3) en huitièmes de finale.

« Je ne comprends pas pourquoi j'ai mal joué parce que je me sentais bien », a indiqué Rajsich. « Van Hees était en feu pendant tout le match. »

Depuis le championnat du monde en République Dominicaine en août dernier, Van Hees et Rajsich se sont rencontrées à cinq occasions. Van Hees a remporté trois de ces cinq affrontements.
