Van Hees starts year with a racquetball win in Seattle

Christie Van Hees of Calgary won the first racquetball tournament of the new year on the Women's Professional Racquetball Organization (WPRO) tour at the Emerald City Open in Seattle, Washington on Sunday.

Van Hees defeated Kerri Wachtel of Cincinnati, Ohio in the final, 9-11, 11-3, 11-7, 11-6. To reach the finals, Van Hees defeated Brenda Kyzer (Leesville, S.C.), 11-2, 11-3, 17-15, in the semi-finals, Rhonda Rajsich (Phoenix, Ariz.), 11-5, 11-3, 11-7, in the quarters, and Doreen Fowler (Silver Springs, Mary.), 11-4, 11-4, 11-7, in the round of 16.

It's Van Hees's second win of the WPRO season, but it makes her two for two, as she's has only played two of the six WPRO tournaments this season. Van Hees also won the US Open in November.

Wachtel has also been having a resurgence this season after taking time off to have twins last year. She has won two WPRO tournaments this season, and been in two other finals.

Van Hees débute l'année avec une victoire à Seattle

Christie Van Hees (Calgary, AB) a remporté l'Omnium Emerald City, premier tournoi de l'année sur le circuit professionnel féminin de racquetball professionnel, la WPRO, présenté dimanche à Seattle, dans l'état de Washington.

Van Hees a vaincu Kerri Wachtel (Cincinnati, OH) en finale par la marque de 9-11, 11-3, 11-7 et 11-6. Pour atteindre cette finale, la Canadienne a vaincu Brenda Kyzer (Leesville, SC), 11-2, 11-3 et 17-15 en demi-finale, Rhonda Rajsich (Phoenix, AZ), 11-5, 11-3 et 11-7 en quarts de finale et Doreen Fowler (Silver Springs, MD), 11-4, 11-4 et 11-7 en huitièmes de finale.

Il s'agit de la deuxième victiore de Van Hees cette saison sur le circuit WPRO, mais d'une deuxième conquête en deux sorties, puisqu'elle a raté les quatre autres tournois depuis le début de la saison. Van Hees avait aussi remporté l'Omnium des Etats-Unis en novembre.

Wachtel a aussi connu une résurgence cette saison après avoir pris une pause pour accoucher de jumeaux l'an dernier. Elle avait remporté deux tournois du circuit WPRO cette saison en plus de prendre part à deux autres finales.
