Champions win again at Racquetball Canada doubles event

The reigning Canadian doubles champions won on Sunday at Racquetball Canada's National Team Selection Event for doubles played at the YM-YWCA in Victoria.

Two time Canadian Champions, Mike Green of Burlington, Ont. and Brian Istace of Calgary defeated Montrealers Vincent Gagnon and François Viens, 15-10, 15-10. Green and Istace built a 7-0 lead in game one and held on to win. But in game two it was Gagnon and Viens who had the lead early, only to see Green and Istace tie it at eight and then push through to win in straight games.

Third place went to Francis Guillemette (Montreal) and Kris Odegard (Saskatoon) who defeated the brother team of James and Tim Landeryou from Saskatoon, 15-11, 15-3.

The four time reigning Canadian women's doubles champions, Josée Grand'Maître of Longueuil, Que. and Jennifer Saunders of Winnipeg defeated Véronique Guillemette (Calgary) and Genevieve Brodeur (Sherbrooke, Que.), 15-6, 15-11, to finish the tournament undefeated and in first place.

The other three teams, Guillemette and Brodeur along with the pair of Lori Jane Powell (San Diego, Calif.) and Linda Ellerington (Shields, Sask.) and the Saskatoon team of Brandi Jacobson Prentice and Alison Schlichemeyer, finished in a three way tie in terms of wins and losses after Jacobson Prentice and Schlichemeyer beat Powell and Ellerington, 15-12, 15-8. Each team had 1 win and 2 losses.

Using a tie-breaking formula it was determined that Guillemette and Brodeur were second, Jacobson Prentice and Schlichemeyer third and Powell and Ellerington fourth.

The results of this event will be combined with last year's National Championships to select the players for the Pan American Championships March 30-April 7 in Santiago, Chile.
