Calgary emerges triumphant at Racquetball Canada's Doubles Selection event in Saskatoon. Calgary accounted for three of four players on the winning teams during the finals of Racquetball Canada's Doubles Selection event at RiverRacquet Athletic Club in Saskatoon on Sunday. On the women's side, Lori-Jane Powell and Julie Neubauer, the No. 3 seeds to start the tournament, pulled off their second straight upset Sunday, defeating top seeds Amanda MacDonald and Karina Odegard of Saskatoon 15-9,15-13. Powell and Neubauer beat the No. 2 pair of Josee Grande'Maitre (Que) and Jennifer Saunders (Man.) the day before to get to the final. Saunders/Grand'Maitre defeated Chantel Turgeon and Veronique Guillemette of Quebec 15-9, 15-4 in the third-place match. On the men's side, No. 3 seeds Brian Istace of Calgary and Mike Ceresia of Burlington, Ont., took the men's title over Cory Osborne of Penetanguishene, Ont., and Francis Viens, of Rock Forest, Que., 8-15. 15-4, 15-1. Tom O'Brien and Mike Green of Burlington, Ont., defeated the Montreal pairing of Vincent Gagnon and Francis Guillemette in the third-place match, 15-11, 15-13. The tournament served as the primary selection event for the Tournament of the Americas, slated for the Dominican Republic in April. The Canadian doubles team for the Tournament of the Americas is expected to be announced soon. Racquetball Canada will hold its Singles Selection event in Niagara Falls, Ont., March 7-9 to select its singles team for the Tournament of the Americas. Both this weekend's event, and the singles tournament in Niagara Falls, are secondary selection events for this summer's Pan Am Games team, also slated for the Dominican Republic.
