Junior Nationals '97

By Josée Grand'Maître, from Canadian Racquetball, vol. 1, no. 4.

1997 Canadian Junior Championship

We had a wonderful week at the junior National championships in Rock Forest last July!

A hundred junior players spending a week in the same club, sharing activities, meeting old acquaintances and creating 11 new ones, parents cheering, supporting and sometimes "comforting" their loved ones and volunteers helping out behind the scenes making sure everything wa in place and that everything went off without a hitch. This was the spirit of the 1997 Canadian Junior National Championships!

After countless hours of preparation things were ready for greeting the participants, coaches and families. The host committee had many special activities planned for the week to keep the players entertained. The highlight was Trapeze night where we discovered the bravest of the brave. With great hospitality throughout the week and a five youth band at the closing awards banquet and dance, everything was in place to ensure that all enjoyed their time in Rock Forest.

The on-court activities were fierce with lots of action, great competition and exciting matches. The maturity displayed by our competitors throughout the week shows us that our junior players are going to a great asset to our sport in the future. Many thanks to the volunteers who put in countless hours to insure the success of the tournament, and the parents who gave up their time and resources so that their children could be with us for the week.

Racquetball is a competitive, clean, viable sport with great values and most of all is fun to play. Lets keep it that way. It's up to us all: players, parents, coaches, volunteers, and administrators to ensure that it remains as such. We are all ultimately responsible for our sport. Lets keep it simple and the participants will take care of the rest!
