Champions Tested on Day 2

Regina, SK -- World Champion Eric Desrochers (Ancaster, Ont.) had to dig deep in order to overcome a challenge by Hugo Laprise (Montreal) in the quarter finals of the Boys 16 & Under singles at the Racquetball Canada Junior Nationals. Laprise, who finished fourth in this event last year, was unable to sustain the pressure as Desrochers took the tiebreaker 11-2. The crowd was on the edge of their seats watching Laprise literally climb the walls to take his shots. Desrochers will now advance to meet the #4 seed Mike Vera of Calgary in the semis, with Remi Parras (Montreal) meeting last year's silver medalist Tim Landeryou (Saskatoon) in the other semi final match.

Winnipeg's Michael McLean, who is the top seed in the 18 & Under division and winner of the 16 & Under division last year, also had his hands full with a vastly improved Charles Chouinard (Montreal). With the games even at one apiece, Chouinard was ahead 10-4 in the pivotal third game, but McLean charged back to win 12-10. Chouinard tied the games again at 2-2, but then McLean took the tiebreaker and will now meet Jeff Buller (Grande Prairie) who upset McLean's doubles partner Eric Youngson. On the other side of the draw, Tim Landeryou upset #3 seed David Serra of Leamington, Ont., and will now play David's twin brother Richard Serra.

In the Girls' divisions, the big story is seven-time National Champion Brandi Jacobson Prentice (Saskatoon) who appears to have both her 14 & Under and her 18 & Under matches well in hand. In the 16 & Under division, Valerie Lefebvre (Montreal) and Alison Schlichemeyer (Saskatoon) will battle it out in the semi finals. Both of these young women played in the World Junior Championships in California last December.

Play will continue until late Sunday afternoon at the Regina Court & Fitness Club, (306)584-1655. So far this weekend, many matches have gone to the tiebreaker - an indication of the intensity and competitiveness of some of the divisions at this year's event.
