The 2001 Racquetball Canada Junior National Championships ended today with two Saskatoon players winning the top honours.

In the Girls singles events, Brandi Jacobson Prentice (age 14) added two more gold medals to her lifetime achievements as she won both the 18& Under division and the 14&Under division. "My toughest games all week were today's finals against Alison," said Jacobson Prentice of her win over fellow National Junior Team member Alison Schlichmeyer. "She took the first game 11-8, and then I got the next three games. We train together, and we always have close games. The crowd was very quiet during our match -- they know that we are good friends, and it seemed liked they didn't want to cheer for one or the other." Schlichmeyer will take home not only the silver medal from the 18&Under, but also the gold medal in the 16&Under division. "There were a lot of good events at this year's tournament," said Jacobson Prentice, "and many strong competitors in the girls' events."

In the Boys division, the #11 seed, Tim Landeryou of Saskatoon, defeated the #2 and #3 seeds on his way to the finals against #5 Jeff Buller of Grande Prairie. "Jeff got the first game 12-10, but then I found my z-serve to the forehand", explained Landeryou after the match. "Then I won the next three games 11-8, 11-4, 11-4." Buller had previously taken out the #4 seed Eric Youngson of Winnipeg, and then the top-seed Michael McLean of Winnipeg.

Landeryou will go home with not just the 18&Under Gold medal, but also the 16&Under silver medal. "I really didn't warm up enough against Eric," said Landeryou of his 16&Under final match against Eric Desrochers. "The first game was pretty bad 11-4, though the next two were closer 11-7 and 11-8." Desrochers, the current World Champion in the 14&Under division, was challenged earlier in the week by Hugo Laprise of Montreal, but the Ancaster, Ontario 16-year-old held on to win that match in the tiebreaker.

Landeryou, Desrochers and Jacobson Prentice will continue to train over the next couple of weeks as they prepare to attend the Racquetball Canada Senior Nationals in Vancouver May 22-26.
