Junior Nationals Set To Begin in Burlington

Burlington, Ontario – Over 120 young Canadians will gather at the Cedar Springs Health, Racquet and Sports Club to compete in the 2002 Racquetball Canada Junior National Championships, May 1st to 5th.

"This is going to be one of the biggest events in recent years," said tournament organizer Adrian Webb. "There are 19 players from the Atlantic Provinces – the best turnout from that part of the country ever." A total of nine provinces will be represented as the boys and girls compete in singles and doubles events ranging from age 8-and-under singles to 18-and-under singles and doubles.

Team Saskatchewan will be looking to maintain last year's first-place finish, while Quebec hopes to improve last year's third place finish to first or second. Team Manitoba took home the silver medal last year. The host Team Ontario will be the largest team present, with about 30 young players expected, while Saskatchewan and Quebec are each sending 22 athletes.

The festivities kick off Wednesday May 1st at 6:45 p.m. with the Opening Ceremonies, and play will begin Thursday morning at 8 a.m. The finals are scheduled for Saturday afternoon, followed by the closing banquet and awards ceremony.
