Approximately 320 players from 9 countries attended annual World Junior
Racquetball Champion-ships held at the Los Caballeros Sports Village in
Fountain from December 19 to 23, 1997. This was the largest number of
entries in the history of the junior competition. There were 30 Canadian
players, and 4 coaches (Loren Prentice, Michel Gagnon, Linda Volek and
Rino Langelier), along with 20 supportive parents and/or family members.
An unprecedented number of gold medals went to Canadians. In two of the singles divisions (Boys 16 & Under and Girls 18 & Under) there were all-Canadian finals. In the Girls 18 & Under Singles final, Lisa Kerr of B.C. defeated Amanda MacDonald of Saskatoon 15-7 and 15-9. Lisa Kerr also won Girls 16 & Under by defeating Brooke Crawford of Oregon. Veronique Guillemette of Quebec placed 3rd in Girls 16 & Under. Kris Odegard of Saskatoon and Kane Waselenchuk of Edmonton fought their way through a draw of 67 players. Kris defeated Kane in the final 15-8 and 15-8. Karina Odegard of Saskatoon won Girls 14 & Under by defeating Kristen Walsh of Utah, 12-15, 15-3, 1 1-0 in the final. Karina teamed with Amanda MacDonald of Saskatoon to win Girls 18 & Under Doubles. Karina also played 14 & Under Mixed Doubles with Terence Li of Saskatoon. They lost in the final to Crystal Czuk of illinois and Adam Taylor of Indiana. Amanda MacDonald of Saskatoon and Francis Guillemette of Quebec won 18 & Under Mixed Doubles by defeating June Neubauer of Calgary and Kane Waselenchuk of Edmonton. Vincent Gagnon and Veronique Guillemette, both of Quebec, placed 3rd in 16 & Under Mixed Doubles. Canada also had a good showing in the younger divisions. James Landeryou of Saskatoon won Boys 10 & Under Singles. Brandi Jacobson Prentice also of Saskatoon won Girls 10 & Under Singles. In 10 & Under Mixed Doubles, James and Brandi got 4th. In 12 & Under teamed up and placed 3rd. Tim Landeryou and Kelly Shaw of Saskatoon got 2nd in 12 & Under Mixed Doubles. Alicia Reid of Brandon got 4th in Girls 8 & Under Multi-Bounce. There were also numerous medals awarded to Canadians in the Blue, Red and White Consolation rounds. It was a fun-filled, although stressful week as the quality of play was extremely high at all levels. Old friendships were renewed; new friendships were made with players from other countries. The banquet and dance held on December 22, were the highlights of the tournament for many of the teenagers. The coaches were at the club from early morning until late at night, every night. There were so many Canadians in so many events that it was difficult for the coaches to take time to eat. Their dedication and expertise is appreciated and has contributed significantly to the success of the Canadian program. We look forward to next year - more players, more medals, more fun! |
