The 2001 Canadian Racquetball National Championships took place from May 22- 26 at Club on Top in Vancouver, BC. Over 250 entrants from all across Canada competed in the event - the highest attendance for the past 10 years.

Tournament play started Tuesday at 9 a.m. The Men and Women's Open Doubles started mid-morning that day and went straight through until Wednesday night. The men's semi-finals included first-seeded team Ceresia/Green vs. Thomas/Kerr, with Ceresia/Green advancing to the finals with wins of 15-4 and 15-6. On the bottom side of the draw, second-seeded team Istace/Waselenchuk advanced to the finals, defeating O'Brien/Osborne with wins of 15-5 and 15-10. The final match between Ceresia/Green and Istace/Waselenchuk took over two hours to complete. At one point it looked as if Ceresia/Green were going to pull off a victory, but after two games and a tiebreaker, Istace and Waselenchuk won with scores of 14-16, 15-7 and 12-10. The third place men's open doubles went to Kerr/Thomas and consolation went to Prentice/Barteski.

The Women's Open Doubles had No. 1 seeded team Odegard/MacDonald vs. No. 4 seeded team Turgeon/Guillemette with Odegard/MacDonald advancing to the finals in three games with wins of 15-7, 12-15 and 11-3. On the bottom side, the match between No. 2 seeded team Powell/Grand'Maître vs. No. 3 seeded team of Kerr/Shanks was taking place at the same time. Powell/Grand'Maître took the match in three with scores of 9-15, 15-10 and 11-9, enabling them to advance to the finals to play against Odegard/MacDonald. In the finals, Powell and Grand'Maître overpowered Odegard and MacDonald, winning top honours with scores of 15-11 and 15-4. Third place women's open doubles went to Turgeon/Guillemette and consolation went to Neubauer/Saunders.

The Open Singles started Thursday at noon and went straight through until Saturday afternoon. The Men's Open Singles semi-finals had No. 1 seed Kane Waselenchuk vs. No. 4 seed Mike Green. In a fair and sporting game, Waselenchuk defeated Green in three games with scores of 11-9, 11-3 and 11-5. Meanwhile, No. 2 seed Mike Ceresia and No. 3 seed Brian Istace were doing battle on the other court. This match took close to three hours to complete and included an injury time-out for Ceresia. The game ended shortly after 1 a.m. with Istace defeating Ceresia in five games. The scores were 2-11, 11-4, 11-13, 11-6 and 11-9.

The final Men's Open consisted of Kane Waselenchuk vs. Brian Istace. The crowd was full of anticipation, awaiting the match to begin. As the game progressed slowly, it was evident that Istace wasn't moving as well as he normally did. A short while later he defaulted the match, most likely due to having played Mike Ceresia the night before in five games that went well into the late-night hours. Istace must have been exhausted to say the least. Waselenchuk took first place and is the 2001 Men's Open Champion. Third place singles went to Mike Green and consolation went to Tom O'Brien.

The Women's Open Singles semi-finals had No. 1 seed Josée Grand'Maître vs. No. 4 seed Chantal Turgeon. Grand'Maître proved she was no slouch and won in three games to advance to the finals, beating Turgeon 11-1, 11-5 and 11-9. On the other side, the women's singles consisted of No. 2 seed Lori-Jane Powell vs. No. 6 seed Jennifer Saunders who defeated Powell in three straight games in an upset match. Saunders won 11-6, 11-0 and 11-2, advancing her to the finals against Josée Grand'Maître.

The Women's Open Singles between Grand'Maître and Saunders was a match full of show and elegance. These women played gracefully and the sportsmanship showed on the court. In the end, Grand'Maître proved that she was a champion and defeated Saunders in three games, 11-5, 11-6 and 11-7. Third place singles went to Chantal Turgeon and consolation went to Veronique Guillemette.

The closing night of the nationals was held at the Victoria Chinese Restaurant located right in the heart of downtown Vancouver. Tournament host Terry Woo ordered a 10- course Chinese meal for everyone to enjoy. For some players, it was a unique experience while others were already acquainted with the traditional 10-course meal. Everyone seemed to have a great time and enjoyed spending their last night of the tournament all dressed up and having a night on the town, entertained by international recording artists Doug and the Slugs. It was wonderful to have the nationals in downtown Vancouver. The city offered tournament participants a chance to take in some of the downtown shopping and sight seeing and to eat at some fabulous restaurants.

It was an unforgettable time for those who attended the 2001 Senior Racquetball Nationals. Hats off to Club on Top's Terry Woo and his fabulous crew of volunteers for taking the time to make the Nationals such a success!

Les Championnats nationaux canadiens de racquetball 2001 ont eu lieu du 22 au 26 mai au Club on Top à Vancouver, CB. Plus de 250 joueurs d'à travers le Canada ont participé à cet événement - la meilleure participation depuis les 10 dernières années.

Le tournoi a débuté mardi à 9:00 am. L'Open masculin et féminin en double a débuté au milieu de la matinée et s'est poursuivi jusqu'au mercredi soir. Les tètes de séries Ceresia/Green ont affronté Thomas/Kerr à la demi-finale masculine. Ceresia/Green se sont rendus en finale avec des victoires de 15-4 et 15-6. Dans la partie inférieure du tableau, l'équipe désignée en deuxième place, Istace/Waselenchuk, s'est rendue à la finale et a remporté la victoire sur O'Brien/Osborne avec 15-5 et 15-10. Le match final entre Ceresia/Green et Istace/Waselenchuk a duré plus de deux heures. Tout semblait indiquer que Ceresia/Green allaient être victorieux mais après deux parties et un bris d'égalité, ils se sont inclinés devant Istace et Waselenchuk qui ont obtenu des scores de 14-16, 15-7 et 12-10. La troisième place de l'Open masculin en double est allée à Kerr/Thomas et la consolation est allée à Prentice/Barteski .

Chez les femmes, toujours à l'Open en double, les têtes de séries Odegard/MacDonald ont affronté les No 4 Turgeon/Guillemette. Odegard/MacDonald se sont rendues en finale en trois parties avec 15-7, 12-15 et 11-3. Au même moment, dans la partie inférieure, avait lieu le match entre les No 2 Powell/Grand'Maître et les No 3 Kerr/Shanks. Powell/Grand'Maître ont remporté le match avec trois scores de 9-15, 15-10 et 11-9, leur permettant d'avancer à la finale et d'affronter Odegard/MacDonald. En finale, Powell et Grand'Maître ont écrasé Odegard et MacDonald et remporté les honneurs avec des pointages de 15-11 et 15-4. La troisième place de l'Open féminin en double est allée à Turgeon/Guillemette et la consolation à Neubauer/Saunders.

L'Open simple a débuté jeudi à midi pour se terminer samedi après-midi. Chez les hommes, en demi-finale, le No 1 au classement Kane Waselenchuk a affronté le No 4 Mike Green. Dans ce qu'on peut qualifier d'un match juste, Green s'est incliné devant Waselenchuk en trois parties. Ce dernier a obtenu des pointages de 11-9, 11-3 et 11-5. Pendant ce temps, le No 2 Mike Ceresia et le No 3 Brian Istace s'affrontaient sur un autre terrain. Ce match a duré près de trois heures, incluant un arrêt de jeu en raison d'une blessure pour Ceresia. Le match s'est terminé peu après 1:00 am lorsque Istace a vaincu Ceresia en cinq parties. Les pointages furent 2-11, 11-4, 11-13, 11-6 et 11-9.

À la finale masculine de l'Open, Kane Waselenchuk a affronté Brian Istace. Les spectateurs s'impatientaient en attendant le début du match. Le jeu progressait lentement et il était évident qu'Istace ne se déplaçait pas aussi bien qu'il ne le fait normalement. Peu après, il s'est disqualifié, probablement parce qu'il avait la veille affronté Mike Ceresia pendant cinq parties, jusqu'aux petites heures du matin. Istace devait être exténué : c'est le moins qu'on puisse dire. Waselenchuk a remporté la première place et est le champion masculin de l'Open 2001. La troisième place en simple est allée à Mike Green et la consolation à Tom O'Brien.

Chez les femmes, à la demi-finale en simple, la No 1 au classement Josée Grand'Maître a affronté la No 4 Chantal Turgeon. Grand'Maître a prouvé qu'elle n'était pas empotée et a gagné en trois parties pour se rendre à la finale, remportant la victoire sur Turgeon avec 11-1, 11-5 et 11-9. De l'autre côté, toujours chez les femmes en simple, la No 2 Lori-Jane Powell et la No 6 au classement Jennifer Saunders se sont affrontées. Powell s'est inclinée devant Saunders trois parties de suite, résultant en un match décevant. Saunders a remporté la victoire 11-6, 11-0 et 11-2 et s'est rendue à la finale contre Grand'Maître.

Le match entre Grand'Maître et Saunders en simple était spectaculaire et élégant. Ces dames ont joué avec grâce et ont fait preuve d'un grand esprit sportif sur le terrain. À la fin, Grand'Maître a prouvé qu'elle était la championne et a remporté la victoire sur Saunders en trois parties, 11-5, 11-6 et 11-7. La troisième place en simple est allée à Chantal Turgeon et la consolation à Véronique Guillemette.

La soirée de clôture des nationaux a eu lieu au restaurant Victoria Chinese situé dans le c¦ur du centre-ville de Vancouver. Terry Woo, hôte du tournoi, a commandé un repas chinois à 10 services, au grand plaisir des invités. Pour certains joueurs, ce fût une expérience unique tandis que d'autres étaient déjà familiers avec les repas à 10 services traditionnels. Tout le monde semble avoir eu du plaisir et avoir apprécié de passer la dernière soirée du tournoi vêtus de leurs plus beaux habits à faire la tournée des grands ducs et d'être divertis par Doug and the Slugs, des artistes de renommée internationale. Ce fût une excellente idée de présenter les nationaux dans le centreville de Vancouver. Les participants du tournoi ont eu la chance de magasiner, de visiter la ville et de manger dans des restaurants fabuleux.

Ce fût un temps inoubliable pour ceux qui ont participé aux championnats nationaux seniors de racquetball 2001. Félicitations à Terry Woo du Club on Top pour son équipe de bénévoles extraordinaire qui a pris le temps de faire de ce tournoi un tel succès!
