Canada’s top players off to Brossard

Brossard, Quebec The top Canadian racquetball players will fight for the national title as well as for tickets for the World Championships this week, in Brossard, Quebec at the 2002 Canadian racquetball Championships. The World Championships will take place in Puerto Rico in August.

We already know there will be new champions in the men’s competitions as Canada’s number one player, Kane Waselenchuk of Edmonton, has not travelled to Quebec after breaking a finger and hurting his elbow in the finals of a pro tour event a few days ago. Michael Green of Hamilton, Ontario is the favorite in the singles tournament. Brian Istace of Calgary, Waselenchuk’s appointed partner, will now pair up with Bill Shipley.

On the women’s side, three-time national champion Josee Grand’Maitre of Longueuil, Quebec is the favorite. Lori Jane Powell of Calgary and Jennifer Saunders, of Winnipeg are the main challengers.

Action kicks off Monday afternoon (May 20) with the opening rounds of the men’s and women’s double events. The competition will go on until Saturday, May 25 with the men’s and women’s single finals.
