May 21, 2002 Odegard and MacDonald stay on track Brossard, Quebec – Karina Odegard and Amanda MacDonald of Saskatoon showed why they’re the number one duo in the nation. Overcoming a slow start, they have earned their way to the Canadian championships final with a 15-13, 15-4 victory over Julie Nebauer, of Calgary and Veronique Guillemette of Montreal. “We started out a little slow but we dug in there and it was nice to win even thought we weren’t playing a hundred and ten percent, we really pulled it out at the end,” said MacDonald. The pair is not concerned that the slow start will continue for Wednesday’s final. “It was good to get that game out of us so that we’ll be able to pick up where we’ve left this game,” she said. The Saskatchewan team better have a great start or they’ll get in trouble against their opponents, Josee Grand’Maitre and Chantal Turgeon of Quebec, who nailed Jennifer Saunders of Winnipeg and Lori-Jane Powell of Calgary with 8-1 and 9-0 leads in their semi-final matches. “They’re a consistent team, they make very few errors but again we’ve had good success against them in the past so we’ll go in there playing as we always play, strong and solid,” said MacDonald of her opponents. On the men’s side giant-killers Vincent Gagnon and Francis Guillemette from Quebec continued on their way to the top by uprooting the top seeded pair of Michael Green and Tom O’Brien of Ontario, to the great delight of the local crowd, in semi final action at the Canadian racquetball championships at Club Sani-Sport, in Brossard, Quebec. Gagnon, from Longueuil, and Guillemette, from Deauville, frustrated the number one duo by rallying from a loss in the opening match to win the following two. “I felt like this was to be our toughest match as if it was like the finals. It’s a tough one to swallow,” said O’Brien, of Hamilton. “We served on their weaknesses and it paid off as the game rolled,” said Gagnon. The local favorites will face veterans Mike Ceresia and Gary Waite of Ontario in Wednesday’s final. Ceseria and Waite upsetted Brian Istace and Bill Shepley of Calgary, winning 11-5 in the tie breaker. “I think Mike and Gary have the edge in the final due to their experience but the French kids are hot,” said Istace. |
