May 22, 2002 Old champs reconquer their crowns Brossard, Quebec – Amanda MacDonald and Karina Odegard, of Saskatoon are back as queens of Canadian racquetball after defeating Josee Grand’Maitre and Chantal Turgeong, from Quebec in the national championships final on Wednesday, at Club Sani-Sport in Brossard, Quebec. The Saskatoon duo overcame a loss in the first game to the defending champion Grand’Maitre and her new partner. “I came out serving very well and we scored some easy quick points to give us some leads,” said MacDonald. Up 8-2 in the second game, they never looked back and capitalized on shaky play by the Quebec pair. They buldozed their way to the top winning the tie-breaker 11-1. “We had a hard time killing balls. I had other options to change things but I waited to long to use them,” said Grand’Maitre. In the men’s final, veterans Mike Ceresia and Gary Waite of Toronto, brought a brutal end to a splendid tournament by Francis Guillemette and Vincent Gagnon, from Quebec. The Ontarians won 15-4, 15-2. “It’s great to win with the year I’ve been through," he said. "I was wondering at one point if I was to continue playing and now this, so I’m very glad.” This is Ceresia's ninth national doubles titles. He's also a four-time world champion. While MacDonald and Odegard have earned automatic berths to represent Canada at the World Championships, this summer in Puerto Rico, the men's team will be determined based on a selection point system. The singles events will begin on Thursday morning with finals scheduled for Saturday afternoon. |
