Kam Barteski wins the “Battle of Saskatoon”

Brossard, Quebec – When their Saskatoon minor hockey coach used to match them up on the ice, sparks would ignite their opposite teams. They face each other again on Thursday night on a racquetball court in Brossard, Quebec in the round of 16 of the Canadian championships’ singles event.

After winning the opening game 16-14, Barteski was dropped 15-5 in the second game but Odegard saw nothing but fire in the tie-breaker, with Barteski winning 11-0.

“Kam was playing great tonight, his serves were deadly and he was just on fire,” said coach Loren Prentice after the game.

Barteski is the only Saskatchewan player who made it to the men’s quarter finals. He will face third seeded Corey Osborne of Toronto Friday afternoon.

Odegard and Ryan Powell were the only other Saskatoon representatives. They will now fight for ranks between the ninth and 12th place.

Three Saskatchewan players advanced in the women’s tournament. Fourth seeded and doubles national champion Amanda MacDonald defeated Valerie Lefebvre of Longueuil, Quebec in two straight games while her doubles partner, Karina Odegard, also won 2-0 over Genevieve Brodeur of Sherbrooke, Quebec. Veteran Linda Ellerington defeated fellow Saskatoon player Brandi Jacobsen-Prentice in two games.

The quarter finals will be played on Friday starting at 11 a.m. (EASTERN), followed by the semi-finals. The title matches are scheduled on Saturday afternoon.
