Early exits for Saskatoon players

Brossard, Quebec – Of the four Saskatoon players that entered the quarter finals at the Canadian national racquetball championships, none survived and they’re all relegated to fight for fifth place.

The biggest surprise is in the women’s tournament where fourth seeded Amanda MacDonald dropped to Chantal Turgeon, of Rock Forest, Quebec, 12-10 in the tie-breaker.

“I played well it’s just she finished her shots better,” said MacDonald who won the doubles title on Wednesday.

Karina Odegard, MacDonald’s partner in the doubles event, was defeated in two straight games by third seeded Lori-Jane Powell, of Calgary. Meanwhile, Linda Ellerington lost to top seeded Josee Grand’Maitre, from Longueuil, Quebec.

In the men’s tournament, Kam Barteski looked like he could have upset third seeded Corey Osborne, of Toronto but he lost the opening game 16-14 and collapsed in the second game, which he lost 15-5.

“We’re happy with the doubles performance of Amanda MacDonald and Karina Odegard and I believe Kam Barteski also had a great tournament. Without saying it’s been a disappointing tournament for us as a team but it hasn’t been great either,” said Team Saskatchewan coach Loren Prentice.

In Saturday’s finals, top seeded Michael Green, from Toronto and Brian Istace, from Calgary will face off for the men’s title while Josee Grand’Maitre and Jennifer Saunders, of Winnipeg will be up for the women’s title.
