May 24, 2002 Jennifer Saunders returns to final Brossard, Quebec – Jennifer Saunders is up for a sweep at the top of Racquetball Canada’s women’s rankings. She will face three-time national champion Josee Grand’Maitre, from Longueuil, Quebec, in Saturday’s final of the Canadian racquetball championships at Club Sani Sport in Brossard, Quebec. Saunders defeated Grand’Maitre in January in the title game of the National Singles Monitoring Event. On Friday, the second seeded from Winnipeg first took care of Julie Nebauer, of Calgary, in two straight games of 15-7, 15-4 in the quarter finals before defeating third seeded Lori-Jane Powell, of Calgary. “It’s a great rivalry so I’m looking forward to it,” said Saunders about her opponent in the final, who defeated her in last year’s Canadian championships final in Vancouver. “Josee plays lots of patterns and she plays pretty tough against me but I know that if I’m shooting well I can do well against her.” In the men’s tournament, Greg Starodub, of Winnipeg was ousted in the tie-breaker by local favourite, Vincent Gagnon, of Longueuil, Quebec after winning the first game. “I started panicking instead of relaxing. My forehand was really off and he kept sending the ball on that side,” he said. The men’s finals will have Michael Green, from Toronto and Brian Istace, from Calgary, facing each other off for the title. |
