Brian Istace misses first shot at National title

Brossard, Quebec – Brian Istace of Calgary was no match for top seeded Michael Green, from Hamilton, who defeated the Albertan in a pair of quick games to win his first national singles racquetball championship, Saturday afternoon at Club Sani Sport, in Brossard, Quebec.

It was Istace’s first shot at the National title.

The composition of Canada’s men’s squad for the World Championships is yet to be determined. Current doubles player Mike Ceresia of Toronto has yet to confirm his commitment to the team, which pushes singles champion Michael Green to choose between entering the singles or the doubles event.

Canada’s number one player, Kane Waselenchuk, of Edmonton, was not at the Nationals with a severe injury to his playing hand, so his status is also to be determined for the Worlds in the coming days.

The women’s team is all set up for Puerto Rico. Jennifer Saunders was crowned Canada’s new racquetball queen on Saturday after defeating top seeded and defending champion Josee Grand’Maitre, of Longueuil, Quebec in the title match.

The 25 year-old from Winnipeg has dominated the encounter, winning in two straight games, 15-12 and 15-4.

Grand’Maitre as well as the doubles champions Amanda MacDonald and Karina Odegard, from Saskatoon will also travel to Puerto Rico. Lori-Jane Powell, of Calgary, will miss the Worlds for the first time since 1994.

“Third in doubles is the lowest I placed at Nationals in years so that wasn’t a highlight at all. I’m happy with my third place in the singles event considering I finished fourth last year,” said Powell.
