Doubles Champions Again
REGINA, SASKATCHEWAN : May 24, 2005
Three of the four doubles champions from 2004 repeated the feat at the 2005 Canadian National Racquetball Championships in Regina, Saskatchewan at the Regina Court and Fitness Club.
The defending women's champions, Josée Grand'Maître of Longueuil, Quebec and Jennifer Saunders of Winnipeg, won for the third year in a row by beating rivals Lori-Jane Powell (Calgary) and Julie Neubauer (Calgary), 15-12, 11-15, 11-2.
Saunders said Nationals are motivation enough, but there was some extra motivation as Powell and Neubauer had beaten them in Calgary in January.
She felt an important part of the match was that they came back in the second game, and "got some momentum from that."
Grand'Maître agreed. "I'm happy with the way we came back from a sluggish second game," she said afterwards. It's Grand'Maître's fourth title in the last five years, having won the last three years with Saunders and in 2001 with Powell.
Every championship is special for Grand'Maître, "because I don't know how much longer I'll be playing." She's 43 years old, but still competing at the highest level.
Saunders said "I've won the icing. Now it's time to win the cake," when asked to look ahead to singles play that will begin on Wednesday. Powell has defeated Saunders in the last two Nationals finals, but Saunders won in 2002 and beat Powell earlier this year in the final of the National Team Selection Event.
Half of the 2004 men's champions won again in 2005, as Mike Green of Hannon, Ontario, and Brian Istace of Calgary defeated Montrealers Vincent Gagnon and François Viens, 15-6, 15-5. Green won last year with Tom O'Brien (Penetanguishene, ON), who missed this year due to injury.
This year's final was all about pace. Istace said "we knew our power would keep them off balance. So we wanted to use our power to our advantage."
Green agreed saying he didn't remember Viens and Gagnon "setting up for many shots." He said further "we were just ripping the ball cross court, especially Brian."
Both Istace and Green felt the courts were fast, which was an extra advantage for their power game.
Another advantage for Green is that he's now completely healthy and "enjoying the game more than before. I'm happy being out there," he said. Asked what was the cause of his renewed enthusiasm, Green said that it was "a few months away, and feeling less pressure when playing" that have made the difference.
Over 160 players from across Canada are entered in the championships in singles and doubles in men's and women's divisions, as well as mixed doubles. The doubles competition wrapped up on Tuesday. Singles competition begins Wednesday and continues through Saturday.

Doubles Championships Set

The finals are set for the doubles competitions at The Canadian National Racquetball Championships in Regina, Saskatchewan at the Regina Court and Fitness Club.
In the men's final, Mike Green of Hannon, Ontario, and Brian Istace of Calgary will play Montrealers Vincent Gagnon & François Viens.
Green and Istace reached the final by beating Eric Desrochers (Ancaster, ON) and Corey Osborne (Penetanguishene, ON), 15-7, 15-10 in one semi-final. In the other semi, Gagnon and Viens beat Kris Odegard (Saskatoon) and Ryan Powell (Calgary), 15-8, 15-6.
Green won last year's doubles championship team with Tom O'Brien (Penetanguishene, ON), but O'Brien is injured and not playing this year's tournament. Green and Istace have played before, however.
They won silver in the World Championships team competition in South Korea last year, and earlier this year took silver in the Pan American Championships.
The women's final will be a battle between defending champions Josée Grand'Maître of Longueuil, Quebec and Jennifer Saunders of Winnipeg and Calgaryians Lori-Jane Powell and Julie Neubauer.
Powell and Neubauer are the top seeds based on their victory over Grand'Maître and Saunders in the National Team Selection Event in January.

Racquetball Victors on Victoria Day

The first victors were decided on Victoria Day at The Canadian National Racquetball Championships in Regina, Saskatchewan at the Regina Court and Fitness Club. Play will continue through Saturday. The doubles competition is being run on Monday and Tuesday.
Mike Green of Hannon, Ontario, won the Open men's doubles championship last year with Tom O'Brien (Penetanguishene, ON). However, O'Brien is not playing this year due to injury.
Instead, Brian Istace of Calgary will be partnering with Green. They will make a formidable team, as Istace was 2nd in singles to Green last year, and 2nd in doubles in 2004, when he played with Kris Odegard of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. Also, Green and Istace won a silver medal in the Pan American Championships in April.
Green and Istace won both of their first matches. They beat Scott Smith and Jeff Buller of Grand Prairie, Alberta, 15-2, 15-8 in the round of 16, and then defeated Montrealers Simon Rainville and Francis Guillemette, 15-5, 15-12.
The other top seeds also were winners on Monday. Montrealers Vincent Gagnon and François Viens, the number one seeds, beat James Landeryou (Saskatoon) and Nathaniel Husulak (Saskatoon), 15-1, 15-4 in their only match of the day.
Eric Desrochers (Ancaster, ON) and Corey Osborne (Penetanguishene, ON) the number two seeds defeated Scott Campbell (Brandon, MB) and Marc Arsenault (Moncton, NB), 15-5, 15-10 in the round of 16s, and then beat Albertans Jason Ully (Lethbridge, AB) and Jason Pate (Calgary), 15-12, 15-11.
On Tuesday, Green and Istace will play Desrochers and Osborne in one semi-final, with Gagnon and Viens playing Kris Odegard (Saskatoon) and Ryan Powell (Calgary), who are the fourth seeds, in the other semi.
In women's play, defending champions Josée Grand'Maître of Longueuil, Quebec and Jennifer Saunders of Winnipeg started their title defense well, beating Winnipeggers Sara Jane Schmidt and Barbara Neudorf, 15-5, 15-3, and then beating Quebecers Véronique Guillemette (Sherbrooke, PQ) and Geneviève Brodeur (Sherbrooke, PQ), 15-8, 15-4.
Calgaryians Lori-Jane Powell and Julie Neubauer also had a good start, winning their first two matches. First, they beat Linda Ellerington (Saskatoon) and Nathalie Bernard (Montreal), 15-7, 15-2, and then defeating Saskatoon natives Brandi Jacobson Prentice and Alison Schlichemeyer, 15-11, 15-11.
This sets up a Grand'Maître and Saunders and Powell & Neubauer final on Tuesday for the National Championship.

Les champions en double sont double champions

Trois des quatre champions en double de 2004 ont défendu leur titre avec succès aux championnats canadiens de racquetball 2005 au club Court & Fitness de Regina, en Saskatchewan.
Chez les femmes, Josée Grand'Maître (Longueuil, QC) et Jennifer Saunders (Winnipeg, MB) ont remporté un troisième titre consécutif en battant leurs rivales Lori-Jane Powell et Julie Neubauer de Calgary en finale (15-12, 11-15 et 11-2).
Saunders a déclaré que les championnats canadiens étaient une motivation en soi mais qu'il y avait quelque chose de supplémentaire du fait que ces deux Albertaines les avaient battues en janvier à Calgary.
Elle croit que leur retour dans le deuxième match a été un point tournant de la finale. « Nous avons pris notre rythme à partir de ce moment, » raconte-t-elle.
« Je suis heureuse de la façon dont nous sommes revenues après un deuxième match difficile, » a acquiescé Grand'Maître qui signait ainsi un quatrième titre en double au cours des cinq dernières années, ayant remporté les trois dernières finales aux côtés de Saunders et celle de 2001 avec Powell.
Chaque championnat est spécial pour Grand¹Maître car « je ne sais pas combien d'années je pourrai continuer à jouer, » raconte la joueuse de 43 ans qui évolue toujours parmi l'élite.
« Il s'agit pour moi du crémage, je vais maintenant m'attaquer au gâteau, » a ajouté Saunders à\à propos du tournoi en simple qui débutera mercredi. Powell a vaincu Saunders au cours des deux dernières finales nationales mais Saunders a eu le dessus en 2002 et a vaincu Powell plus tôt cette année au tournoi des sélections nationales.
La moitié des champions masculins de 2004 a de nouveau monté sur la plus haute marche du podium en 2005 puisque Mike Green (Hannon, ON) et Brian Istace (Calgary, AB) ont défait les Montréalais Vincent Gagnon et François Viens en finale (15-6 et 15-5). L'an dernier, Green l'avait emporté avec Tom O'Brien (Penetanguishene, ON), qui était absent cette année en raison d'une blessure.
La finale de 2005 était centrée sur la vitesse. « Nous savions que notre puissance les garderait hors d'équilibre c¹est pourquoi nous voulions utiliser cet aspect à notre avantage, » a indiqué Istace.
Green s'est dit d'accord indiquant qu'il ne se rappelait pas d'avoir vu Viens et Gagnon « préparer tant de coups. Nous pulvérisions la ballon à travers le terrain, spécialement Brian, » a dit Green.
Les champions ont affirmé que les terrains étaient rapides, un avantage supplémentaire pour leur jeu axé sur la puissance.
Un autre avantage pour Green est sa bonne forme physique. « Je n'ai jamais autant profité du jeu. Je suis heureux d'être sur le terrain, » dit-il. Questionné au sujet de la cause de son enthousiasme renouvelé, Green a indiqué qu'il « a pris quelques mois de congé et qu'il ressentait moins de pression au jeu. » Ce qui fait toute la différence !

Premières victoires à l'occasion de la Fête de la Reine Victoria

Les premières victoires ont été enregistrées en ce jour de Fête de la Reine Victoria aux championnats canadiens de racquetball 2005 au club Court & Fitness de Regina, en Saskatchewan. Le tournoi en double ouvre les festivités lundi et mardi d'un événement qui se terminera samedi.
Mike Green (Hannon, ON) a remporté le titre masculin l'an dernier avec Tom O'Brien (Penetanguishene, ON) mais ce dernier est absent cette année en raison d'une blessure.
C'est donc avec Brian Istace (Calgary, AB) que Green tentera de défendre sa couronne. Ces deux athlètes formeront une équipe redoutable plus qu'Istace a terminé deuxième en simple et en double, derrière Green aux championnats canadiens de 2004 alors qu'il évoluait avec Kris Odegard (Saskatoon, SK). De plus, Green et Istace ont remporté une médaille d'argent aux championnats panaméricains en avril.
Green et Istace ont remporté leurs premiers matchs, d'abord face à Scott Smith et Jeff Buller de Grand Prairie, Alberta (15-2 et 15-8) en huitièmes de finale puis contre les Montréalais Simon Rainville et Francis Guillemette (15-5 et 15-12).

Eric Desrochers (Ancaster, ON) et Corey Osborne (Penetanguishene, ON), deuxième tête de série, ont défait Scott Campbell (Brandon, MB) et Marc Arsenault (Moncton, N.-B.) par des marques de 15-5 et 15-10 en huitièmes de finale puis ils ont vaincu Jason Ully (Lethbridge, AB) et Jason Pate (Calgary, AB) 15-12 et 15-11.
Mardi, Green et Istace affronteront Desrochers et Osborne en demi-finale tandis que Gagnon et Viens se frotteront à Kris Odegard (Saskatoon, SK) et Ryan Powell (Calgary, AB), quatrième tête de série.
Côté féminine, les championnes en titre Josée Grand'Maître (Longueuil, QC) et Jennifer Saunders (Winnipeg, MB) ont débuté la défense de leur couronne en écartant Sara Jane Schmidt et Barbara Neudorf de Winnipeg (15-5 et 15-3) puis les Sherbrookoises Véronique Guillemette et Geneviève Brodeur (15-8 et 15-4).
Lori-Jane Powell et Julie Neubauer de Calgary ont également connu un bon départ, battant d'abord Linda Ellerington (Saskatoon, SK) et Nathalie Bernard (Montréal, QC) 15-7 et 15-2, puis les jeunes Brandi Jacobson Prentice et Alison Schlichemeyer de Saskatoon (15-11 et 15-11).
Ces résultats mettent donc la table pour une finale opposant Grand'Maître et Saunders à Powell et Neubauer, mardi.
Plus de 160 joueurs de partout au Canada sont inscrits pour les tournois en simple et en double dans les divisions masculines et féminines ainsi que dans un tournoi double mixte. La compétition en double se déroule lundi et mardi tandis que le tournoi se simple suivra de mercredi à samedi.
