National Championship SummaryREGINA, SASKATCHEWAN : May 29, 2005 The singles competition at the 2005 Canadian National Racquetball Championships in Regina, Saskatchewan at the Regina Court and Fitness Club ended on Saturday. Below is a results summary of all 14 singles divisions. Saskatchewan, the host province, can boast the most national racquetball champions with five, followed by Manitoba with three, Ontario and Quebec with two each and Newfoundland and Labrador and British Columbia with one each. Over 160 players from across Canada are competing in the championships in singles and doubles in men's and women's divisions, as well as mixed doubles. Champions of racquetballREGINA, SASKATCHEWAN : May 28, 2005 Corey Osborne of Penetanguishene, Ontario and Jennifer Saunders of Winnipeg were crowned Canadian champions in women's and men's Open singles on Saturday at the 2005 Canadian National Racquetball Championships in Regina, Saskatchewan at the Regina Court and Fitness Club. But neither of them had easy final matches. Saunders played Linda Ellerington of Dundurn, Saskatchewan in the women's final, and looked to be having an easy time of it after winning the first game 15-3. But Ellerington showed that her upset of number one Lori-Jane Powell of Calgary on Friday was no fluke by winning game two, 15-11. However, in the tie-breaker Saunders again dominated, winning 11-1, and earning her second National Championship in singles and second this year, as she won the doubles crown earlier in the week with Josée Grand'Maître (Longueuil, PQ). After the doubles title, Saunders had said that the doubles title was like the icing on a cake, and the singles title was the cake. Today she had her cake. Saunders won her first singles title in 2002 defeating Grand'Maître in the final. Powell beat Grand'Maître in the third place match, 4-15, 15-13, 11-2. In men's competition, fourth seed Osborne also needed a tie-breaker to beat sixth seed Kris Odegard of Saskatoon, 15-5, 6-15, 11-5, and claim his first National Championship in singles. It was also the first time since Thursday that the higher seed won in the men's competition. Afterwards, Osborne said was "amazing" to win the title that had been a goal of his for so long. He had thought the championship almost impossible to win with three time defending champion Mike Green (Burlington, ON) in the draw. Yet Osborne beat Green on Friday to advance to the final. Osborne thought he'd likely play two seed Brian Istace of Calgary, but Odgard dispatched of Istace on Friday also. Even though Odegard was the lower ranked player, Osborne knew he had to play well today to win, because he'd "never seen Odegard playing so well, especially moving so well on the court." Odegard had been the giant killer of the tournament, as he beat the three seed Vincent Gagnon of Montreal prior to the victory over Istace. But Osborne was one giant Odegard couldn't topple. Over 160 players from across Canada competed in the racquetball national championships in singles and doubles in men's and women's divisions, as well as mixed doubles. Number 1 seeds fallREGINA, SASKATCHEWAN : May 27, 2005 Both women's and men's top seeds and defending champions fell by the wayside in the semi-finals of the 2005 Canadian National Racquetball Championships in Regina, Saskatchewan at the Regina Court and Fitness Club, as upsets were the order of the day. It was a Black Friday for number one seeds Lori-Jane Powell of Calgary and Mike Green of Burlington, Ontario. Powell was the two time defending champion and Green had won the last three years. But neither will be crowned champion on Saturday. Powell fell first. Linda Ellerington of Dundurn, Saskatchewan beat Powell, 16-14, 15-10. Ellerington, seeded fourth, will meet second seed Jennifer Saunders (Winnipeg) in the final. Saunders beat third seed Josée Grand'Maître (Longueuil, PQ), 15-7, 15-8 in the other semi-final. Saunders was the only one or two seed to survive Friday. Saturday's final will be the fifth in a row for Saunders, who won in 2002 when she defeated Grand'Maître in the final. Ellerington will be making her first appearance in a championship final. Green fell to fourth seed Corey Osborne (Penetanguishene, ON), 15-9, 13-15, 11-7. Saturday's final will be the second in Osborne's career. He lost to Green in the 2003 final. But Osborne's opponent is the giant killer of the tournament. Most seeds continue to grow on the prairieREGINA, SASKATCHEWAN : May 26, 2005 The work got harder for the top seeds and not all of them survived the quarter finals on Wednesday at the 2005 Canadian National Racquetball Championships in Regina, Saskatchewan at the Regina Court and Fitness Club. The upset of the day was Vincent Gagnon (Montreal), the men's number three seed, losing to sixth seed Kris Odegard (Saskatoon), 13-15, 15-3, 11-1. Immediately following that, Brian Istace of Calgary, the second seed, was pushed to a tie-breaker by Patrick Charron (St. Hubert, PQ), 14-16, 15-1, 11-1. Earlier in the day top seed, Mike Green (Burlington, ON) had an easier time with Tim Landeryou (Saskatoon), winning 15-5, 15-2, and Corey Osborne (Penetanguishene, ON), seeded fourth, also won in straight games, defeating François Viens (Montreal), 16-14, 15-6. The women's matches went according to form, as top seed and two time defending champion, Lori-Jane Powell of Calgary defeated Saskatoon native Alison Schlichemeyer, 15-9, 15-3. The women's number two and three seeds also won, as number two Jennifer Saunders (Winnipeg) defeated hometown girl Geneviève Brodeur (Sherbrooke, PQ), 15-9, 15-6, and number three Josée Grand'Maître (Longueuil, PQ) beat Julie Neubauer of Calgary, 15-10, 15-3. Singles Competitions BeginREGINA, SASKATCHEWAN : May 25, 2005 The singles competitions have begun at the 2005 Canadian National Racquetball Championships in Regina, Saskatchewan at the Regina Court and Fitness Club. The doubles competition wrapped up on Tuesday. The top seeds in the men's and women's open divisions won their opening matches with ease. Lori-Jane Powell of Calgary is the number 1 seed in women's open and the two time defending champion. She defeated Regina native Shelley Hepworth 15-8, 15-0. The women's number two and three seeds also won, as number two Jennifer Saunders (Winnipeg) defeated hometown girl Christine Richardson (Regina), 15-1, 15-4, and number three Josée Grand'Maître (Longueuil, PQ) beat Sara Jane Schmidt (Winnipeg), 15-2, 15-8. In men's play, Mike Green (Burlington, ON) is the three time defending champion. He had a bye in the first round, and beat Jason Pate of Calgary, 15-10, 15-11, in the round of 16. Number two seed, Brian Istace (Calgary) also had a bye and will play James Landeryou of Sasakatoon later on Tuesday night. The number three and four seeds both won. Osborne et Saunders championsREGINA, SASKATCHEWAN : 28 mai 2005 Corey Osborne (Penetanguishene, ON) et Jennifer Saunders (Winnipeg, MB) ont été couronnés champions canadiens en simple aujourd'hui aux championnats canadiens de racquetball au club Court & Fitness de Regina, en Saskatchewan. Ni l'un ni l'autre des champions n'a eu la tâche facile en finale. Saunders s'est mesurée à Linda Ellerington (Dundurn, SK) chez les femmes et semblait en route vers une victoire facile après avoir remporté le premier match 15 à 3. Toutefois, Ellerington a prouvé que sa victoire surprise sur la favorite Lori-Jane Powell (Calgary, AB), vendredi n'était pas de la frime et elle a remporté le deuxième match 15 à 11. Saunders a repris le dessus au bris d'égalité pour facilement l'emporter 11 à 1 et signer un deuxième titre national en simple, son deuxième triomphe cette semaine, puisqu'elle a aussi été couronnée championne canadienne du double avec sa coéquipière Josée Grand'Maître (Longueuil, QC). Après avoir remporté le tournoi en double mardi, Saunders avait déclaré qu'il s'agissait du crémage et qu'elle s'attaquerait maintenant au gâteau, le tournoi en simple. C'est ce qu'elle a fait avec brio aujourd'hui. Saunders a remporté son premier titre en simple en 2002 en battant Grand'Maître en finale. Powell a vaincu Grand'Maître dans le match pour la troisième place (4-15, 15-13 et 11-2). Chez les hommes, Osborne, quatrième favori, a aussi nécessité le bris d'égalité pour vaincre le sixième favori Kris Odegard de Saskatoon, SK (15-5, 6-15 et 11-5) en finale pour remporter son premier titre national en simple. Il s'agissait du premier match depuis jeudi qu'un favori battait un joueur classé plus bas. « Splendide! », s'est contenté de dire Osborne après la conquête de ce titre qui a été un objectif depuis si longtemps. Il a cru la tâche impossible quand il a été confronté au triple champion en titre Mike Green (Burlington, ON) en demi-finale. Osborne a toutefois eu le meilleur sur Green vendredi pour accéder à la finale où il croyait rencontrer le deuxième favori Brian Istace (Calgary, AB) mais ce dernier a été écarté par Odegard dans l'autre demi-finale. Mème si Odegard était le moins bien classé des deux finalistes, Osborne savait qu'il devait bien jouer pour l'emporter. « Je n'ai jamais vu Kris si bien jouer et si bien se déplacer sur le terrain, » dit-il. Odegard a été surprenant tout au long du tournoi, éliminant le troisième favori Vincent Gagnon (Montréal, QC) avant d'abattre Istace. Les favoris tombentREGINA, SASKATCHEWAN : 27 mai 2005 Les favoris chez les hommes et chez les femmes ont été éliminés en demi-finale du tournoi en simple des championnats canadiens de racquetball 2005 au club Court & Fitness de Regina, en Saskatchewan. Ce fut un vendredi noir pour les favoris Lori-Jane Powell (Calgary, AB) et Mike Green (Burlington, ON). Powell était double championne en titre chez les femmes tandis que Green était triple champion en titre chez les hommes. Cette série s'arrêtera là pour les deux athlètes surpris. Linda Ellerington (Dundurn, SK) a eu le meilleur sur Powell (16-14 et 15-10). Quatrième favorite, Ellerington affrontera la deuxième favorite Jennifer Saunders (Winnipeg, MB) qui a vaincu la troisième favorite Josée Grand'Maître (Longueuil, QC), 15-7 et 15-8 dans l'autre demi-finale. Il s'agira d'une cinquième finale consécutive pour Saunders qui a remporté le titre en 2002 en battant Grand'Maître en finale. Ellerington en sera à une première finale nationale. Chez les hommes, Green s'est incliné face au quatrième favori Corey Osborne (Penetanguishene, ON), 15-9, 13-15 et 11-7. Ce dernier accède ainsi à sa deuxième finale en carrière, lui qui s'est incliné devant Green en 2003. L'autre finaliste, le sixième favori Kris Odegard (Saskatoon, SK), a présentement le vent dans les voiles, jouant dans sa province et a écarté tous les visiteurs. Sa victime vendredi a été le deuxième favori Brian Istace (Calgary, AB) qu'il a vaincu 15-13 et 15-9. Cette victoire survient dans la foulée d'un gain sur le troisième favori Vincent Gagnon (Montréal, QC). C'est la première fois que seulement un des deux favoris chez les hommes et chez les femmes atteigne la finale des championnats canadiens. La surprise du jour a été la victoire du sixième favori Kris Odegard (Saskatoon, SK) aux dépends du troisième favori Vincent Gagnon (Montréal, QC) par des marques de 13-15, 15-3 et 11-1. Tout de suite après, le deuxième favori Brian Istace (Calgary, AB) a été forcé au bris d'égalité pour vaincre Patrick Charron (St-Hubert, QC), 14-16, 15-1 et 11-1. Les favoris chez les hommes et les femmes n'ont pas été inquiétés, remportant leurs premiers matchs avec aisance. Lori-Jane Powell (Calgary, AB) est double championne en titre et favorite cette année. Elle a vaincu Shelley Hepworth (Regina, SK) 15-8 et 15-0. Victoires aussi pour les deuxième et troisième favorites puisque Jennifer Saunders (Winnipeg, MB) a défait Christine Richardson (Regina, SK), 15-1 et 15-4 alors que Josée Grand'Maître (Longueuil, QC) a vaincu Sara Jane Schmidt (Winnipeg.
