Jennifer Saunders Upsets Canadian Champion

BROSSARD (QC) – Jennifer Saunders of Winnipeg has caused an upset this afternoon by defeating Canadian champion Josee Grand’Maitre of Longueuil, Quebec in the title match of the National Monitoring Event in Brossard, Quebec.

“I’m now the best player in Canada and I intend to stay there,” she said following her victory. Saunders came from a 8-2 deficit in the tie breaker to defeat Grand’Maitre 13-11.

“Down by six, I told myself I couldn’t bear down and that I just needed to get one point at a time, she said. This is a huge win.”

The Winnipeg native has earned a spot on the Canadian squad for the Tournament of the Americas, next March in Bolivia and she’ll enter the Canadian championships as the top seeded player.

“Despite my presence in the final, it was not my greatest weekend, said Grand’Maitre who will also make the trip down to Bolivia. Jennifer really raised her level of play and it’s there to show that I could be in trouble against her when I don’t play my game.”

Saunders got off to a great start in the first set coming back from a 9-8 deficit with six straight points and winning the set 15-11. Grand’Maitre quickly responded with two aces in the second set she won 15-6.

“It was a great game with long rallies, which is always nice for us but also for the spectators,” said Grand’Maitre.

No surprises in the men’s final as Kane Wasenlenchuk of Edmonton defeated Michael Green of Toronto in two straight sets of 15-11 and 15-12.

The top doubles players in the nation will gather next month in Saskatoon for the other National Monitoring Event of the year. The Canadian championships will be held in Brossard in May.
