Mostly according to plan Things have mostly gone according to plan at the Racquetball National Team Selection event for singles in Victoria, as the top men's and women's seeds won their first matches. Lori Jane Powell (Calgary), the current Canadian champion and number one seed, defeated Julie Neubauer (Calgary), 15-7, 15-4. Neubauer defeated Brandi Jacobson Prentice (Saskatoon) in her first round match, 15-10, 11-15, 11-8. Similarly second seed JosÈe Grand'MaÓtre (Longueuil, PQ) had little trouble with Diana Hambley (Abbotsford, BC), winning 15-11, 15-1. Hambley defeated Genevieve Brodeur (Rock Forest, PQ), 15-4, 12-15, 11-6, in round one. Third seed Jennifer Saunders (Winnipeg) beat Linda Ellerington (Saskatoon), 15-3, 15-4. Ellerington beat Kelli Green-Evans (Burlington, ON), 15-3, 15-4, in the first round. In the closest match, fourth seed Amanda Dunn (Prince Albert, SK) beat fifth seed Karina Odegard (Saskatoon), 15-11, 16-14, and came back from an 11-3 deficit in the second game to prevent the tie-breaker. Odegard defeated Alison Schlichemeyer (Saskatoon) in the first round, 15-9, 15-6. Powell, Grand'MaÓtre, Saunders and Dunn now move on to a round robin playoff to determine first through fourth places. In men's competition, Mike Green (Hannon, ON), current Canadian Champion and number 8 on the International Racquetball Tour, beat Richard Trefall (Kelowna), 15-5, 15-7, to move to the quarter finals. Trefall beat Chris Exner (Saskatoon) in round one, 15-13, 15-10. Brian Istace (Calgary), the number two seed, defeated James Landeryou (Saskatoon), 15-10, 15-2, so advanced to the quarter finals. Landeryou beat Steve Majocha (Victoria) in round one, 15-2, 16-14. The third and fourth seeds also had little difficulty winning their matches to get through to the quarter finals. Third seed Corey Osborne (Penetanguishene, ON) beat Lee Connell (Saskatoon), 15-5, 15-1, while fourth seed Vincent Gagnon (Montreal) defeated Nathaniel Husulak (Saskatoon), 15-2, 15-10. In round one, Connell defeated Jason Pate (Calgary), 15-6, 15-8, and Husulak beat Brent Burdeyny (Abbotsford, BC), 15-11, 14-16, 11-4. The upsets of the day came in the middle of the men's draw. Eleventh seeded Jean Philippe Morin (Montreal) beat sixth seed Greg Starodub (Vancouver), 12-15, 15-11, 11-7, to get to the quarter finals. Also, tenth seed Tom O'Brien (Penetanguishene, ON) beat seventh seed Kris Odegard (Saskatoon), 15-6, 15-8, to book his place in the quarter finals. Also moving on to the quarter finals were Tim Landeryou (Saskatoon), who beat Eric Desrochers (Ancaster, ON), 10-15, 15-11, 11-6, and Francis Guillemette (Montreal), who beat Jason Ully (Lethbridge, AB), 16-14, 7-15, 11-9, in a spirited match. The results of this tournament will be used to select the National Team for this year's international events: the Pan American Championships in Ecuador in April, and the World Championships in South Korea in August. The Racquetball National Championships will be May 24-29 at the Cedar Springs Racquet Club in Burlington, Ontario. The Racquetball National Team Selection Singles event continues through Sunday at the Victoria YM/YWCA in Victoria, British Columbia. WOMEN'S ROUND ONE Julie Neubauer (Calgary) d.
