Men follow seeding, women not so much The seeding continue to prove predictive on the second day of the the Racquetball National Team Selection event for singles in Victoria. In men's competition, top seed Mike Green (Hannon, ON), current Canadian Champion and number 8 on the International Racquetball Tour, reached the final, by beating Tim Landeryou (Saskatoon), 15-7, 15-8 in the quarter finals, and then Vincent Gagnon (Montreal), 15-8, 15-11, in the semi-final. To reach the semis, Gagnon defeated Francis Guillemette (Montreal) in the quarter finals, 18-16, 15-12. Green's opponent will be second seed Brian Istace (Calgary), who beat Corey Osborne (Penetanguishene, ON), 15-, 11-15, 11-5, in the other semi final. In the quarter finals, Istace defeated Tom O'Brien (Penetanguishene, ON), 15-7, 15-7, while Osborne beat Jean Philippe Morin (Rock Forest, PQ), 15-3, 15-9. Osborne and Gagnon will play-off for third place on Sunday. In women's competition, a round robin format is being used to determine the first through fourth places. Lori Jane Powell (Calgary), JosÈe Grand'MaÓtre (Longueuil, PQ), Jennifer Saunders (Winnipeg) and Amanda Dunn (Prince Albert, SK), the 1 through 4 seeds respectively, qualified for the round robin on Friday. In Saturday's round robin games, Powell, the current Canadian champion and number one seed, defeated Dunn, 15-4, 15-4. But in her second game, Powell lost to Saunders in three game, 14-16, 15-8, 15-9. After Saturday's games, second seed Grand'MaÓtre is in the driver's seat, as she won both her games, against Saunders, 17-15, 15-12, and Dunn, 11-15, 15-11, 11-7. Powell and Saunders both split theirs. Powell beating Dunn, 15-4, 15-4, and Saunders defeating Powell, 14-16, 15-8, 11-9. Dunn lost both her matches. The results of this tournament will be used to select the National Team for this year's international events: the Pan American Championships in Ecuador in April, and the World Championships in South Korea in August. The Racquetball National Championships will be May 24-29 at the Cedar Springs Racquet Club in Burlington, Ontario. The Racquetball National Team Selection Singles event continues through Sunday at the Victoria YM/YWCA in Victoria, British Columbia.
