Women are upset, but men are not

The women's number 1 seed, Lori Jane Powell (Calgary) was upset by number 2 seeded JosÈe Grand'MaÓtre (Longueuil, PQ) on the final day of the Racquetball National Team Selection event for singles in Victoria.

Grand'MaÓtre won the competition by beating Powell, 15-9, 2-15, 11-6. That result put Jennifer Saunders (Winnipeg) in second place, as she beat Powell on Saturday, and also beat Amanda Dunn (Prince Albert, SK) on Sunday, 15-5, 7-15, 11-3. Dunn finished fourth. A round robin format was used for the top 4 women players.

It was no upset in the men's final, as top seed Mike Green (Hannon, ON), current Canadian Champion and number 8 on the International Racquetball Tour, won the tournament by beating second seed Brian Istace (Calgary), 15-12, 15-2. The match was tied at 10 in the first game, but Green pulled ahead to stay, and then poured it on in game two.

The results of this tournament will be used to select the National Team for this year's international events: the Pan American Championships in Ecuador in April, and the World Championships in South Korea in August.

The Racquetball National Championships will be May 24-29 at the Cedar Springs Racquet Club in Burlington, Ontario.

The Racquetball National Team Selection Singles event ended Sunday at the Victoria YM/YWCA in Victoria, British Columbia.
